The northern French region of Aisne suffered heavy mudslides following a bout of rain between May 1st and May 2nd. The town of Courmelles was particularly affected, with a 57-year-old woman dying after being swept away by mudslides. Her partner was also injured and taken to hospital. The mayor of Courmelles set up a centre to help those impacted by the event, and warned citizens to take protective measures. Europe's spring has so far proven far colder than predicted, and the implications for the continent's food supply are starting to become a real worry. Since mid-April the Balkan states have seen temperatures plunge from near-record highs to unseasonal lows, bringing snow and ice to much of the region. Spain's state Met Office Aemet has warned of a weekend of unsettled and "wintry weather" this weekend in five of Andalucía's provinces. Storm Monica has caused rough rain, snow, wind or rough sea conditions and is due to continue until Sunday night. A storm of snow, wind and rain has hit Spain, disrupting or complicating traffic on many roads across almost the entire country. All regions except Extremadura were put on yellow or orange weather alert in the last few hours. The orange alert for snowfall has been activated in Cantabria, the Pyrenees and Galicia. In Cantabria, snow accumulations of up to 15 cm are expected from 800 metres above sea level. In the Basque Country, Navarra and Castilla y León, heavy rains caused rivers to overflow, with flooding cutting off roads in various areas.
