A record-sized carbon capture plant has launched in Iceland, in what advocates say is another “proof point” for the climate-change-tackling technology. The Mammoth direct air capture and storage (DAC+S) plant run by Climeworks is 10 times bigger than the Swiss company’s previous plant, Orca. Both are based inside the Hellisheiði geothermal park, which holds a large power plant. Once fully operational, the modular Mammoth will suck up to 36,000 tonnes of CO2 from the surrounding air a year using giant fans. By contrast, carbon capture is carried out at the point of emissions - before they can r...

Portugal is the world’s leading producer of cork. In 2023, cork exports achieved a record value of €1.2 billion, 75 percent of which came from cork stoppers, according to APCOR, the Portuguese association of cork producers. The Amorim Group, Portugal's leading cork company, claims that around one out of three wine bottles worldwide is sealed with a cork stopper made in Portugal. About 20 years ago, significant concerns emerged that cork might lose market share to synthetic alternatives, which were less expensive and carried no risk of spoiling the wine with 'cork taint'. However, the industry ...

A greenhouse gas 24,000 times more powerful than carbon dioxide is being driven up by China’s growing electricity needs, according to a new study. CO2 is the number one greenhouse gas on our radar for good reason. A gas naturally present in the atmosphere but turbocharged by humans’ fossil fuel combustion, it is the single biggest contributor to the climate crisis. But an overload of carbon isn’t the only gas threatening Earth’s climate; international agreements cover a number of other gases including a man-made grouping of fluorinated (F) gases. Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) falls within this po...

New research has revealed the climate and air quality impacts of the world’s worst polluting airports. The 2024 Airport Tracker, produced by think tank ODI in partnership with Transport & Environment, measures the impact of passenger flights and, for the first time, air freight. It found that Dubai International was overall the most polluting airport, producing the same emissions as five coal plants in 2019 alone, the last year for which data is available. In Europe, Frankfurt, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Schiphol all rank among the world’s worst 20 performing airports. London was th...

Germany is planning to allow carbon to be stored underground at offshore sites, the country’s vice chancellor announced yesterday. Europe's biggest economy is making good progress with expanding its renewable energy sources and usage. But a solution is needed for the carbon dioxide emitted by some sectors such as the cement industry that are “hard to abate,” said Robert Habeck, who is also the economy and climate minister. Germany, which is home to many energy-intensive industries, aims to cut its emissions to net zero by 2045. Spain’s plan to ban domestic flights where you can take a train in...

In his podcast addressing the markets today, Louis Navellier offered the following commentary. War Against Natural GasThe G7 meeting in Japan will be interesting this week. Germany is in disagreement with Britain and France over support for natural gas. In fact, Germany has strived to label natural gas as “green.” In North America, we do not know what to do with all the natural gas that we have, which is why in North Dakota natural gas in their crude oil fields is “flared,” since there are no pipelines to transport natural gas. So if California, New York, Britain and France succeed in curtaili...
