Travellers can now take a short international flight in an electric aircraft from Maastricht Aachen Airport in the Netherlands. It is a two-month trial of "The Electrifly project" in which people can fly without emissions between the airports of Maastricht, Liège, and Aachen (Merzbrück). These are flights of between 30 and 50 kilometres and it is expected that initially, mainly business people will use them. After extreme weather events in Switzerland that have left at least four people dead, the Alpine country might have become further imperilled by natural disasters, a member of its government said. “Are we going to experience one catastrophe after another every summer? Or is this an exception? Nobody knows. But certainly, the accumulation of such events worries us and shows how vulnerable we are,” Swiss Federal Council member Ignazio Cassis said on Sunday. Intense wildfires above the Arctic Circle this June have released megatonnes of carbon into the atmosphere, according to EU scientists. Data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) shows that a majority of the fires are burning in the Sakha Republic in Russia's Far North. These seasonal blazes are moving north as climate change causes temperatures to rise in the Arctic. They tear through tundra and boreal forests, releasing greenhouse gases from the carbon-rich soil. ‘The largest increase in extreme wildfires over the last two decades’The Sakha Republic has seen much higher te...

One method of making electricity cleanly to address climate change has been quietly advancing and on Tuesday it hit a milestone. A California utility is backing the largest new geothermal power development in the US - 400 megawatts of clean electricity from the Earth’s heat - enough for some 400,000 homes. Utility company Southern California Edison will purchase the electricity from Fervo Energy, a Houston-based geothermal company, Fervo announced. The company is drilling up to 125 wells in southwest Utah. Clean electricity like this reduces the need for traditional power plants that cause cli...

Denmark will tax livestock farmers for greenhouse gases emitted by their cows, sheep and pigs from 2030, according to a radical new proposal by the Danish government. Taxation Minister Jeppe Bruus said the scheme aims to slash the Northern European country's greenhouse gas emissions by 70% from 1990 levels by 2030. Danish livestock farmers will be taxed 300 kroner per ton of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2030, and the tax will increase to 750 kroner by 2035. But due to an income tax deduction of 60%, the actual cost per ton will start at 120 kroner and increase to 300 kroner by 2035. “We will t...
