By Liz Kimbrough In California’s Monterey Bay, where the vast Pacific Ocean meets lush kelp forests, sea otters, especially the females, are becoming more resourceful. These charismatic marine mammals, known for their playful nature and voracious appetites, are facing new challenges and using tools to overcome them. For generations, southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) have relied on the abundant urchins and abalone that populate the kelp forests as their primary food sources. These preferred prey items are relatively easy for otters to crack open and provide a rich source of nutrients....

These beetles, recently lethal to sequoias, bore into branches and trunks, potentially killing trees within six months. While General Sherman showed no signs of beetle activity, the inspection highlighted concerns over climate change and increased threats to sequoias from beetles, wildfires, and drought. The Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition aims to monitor and protect these iconic trees.

This year’s Atlantic hurricane season could bring as many as seven major hurricanes, US government forecasters have said. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year. It says there is an 85 per cent chance of an above-average season from June to November. A total of 17 to 25 named storms have been forecast. It is the highest number of storms the agency has ever projected in its season forecast, with 14 predicted in an average year. Between 8 and 13 are likely to become hurricanes with windspeeds of 119...

Scientists in Switzerland have invented a way to make chocolate healthier and more sustainable. No Oompa Loompas, chocolate rivers or magical gum were involved in the making of this new treat - simply a fresh look at the whole cocoa fruit. Typically, only cocoa beans and pulp are extracted for our chocolate bars. But researchers at the ETH Zurich federal technology institute have discovered that the cocoa pod husk can be used too, as a replacement for granulated sugar. Their new recipe involves taking what’s known as the endocarp, the inner layer of the fruit shell, and mixing it with some of ...

More than a fifth of shareholders voted against Shell’s current climate strategy during the company’s annual general meeting (AGM) in London yesterday. At the same time, they rejected a climate resolution filed by shareholder activist group Follow This. The NGO, which unites shareholders in oil and gas companies to support climate resolutions, called for the company to align its targets with Paris Agreement goals. It is the first AGM since Shell scaled back several climate commitments earlier this year. In March, the company weakened its 2030 carbon reduction targets. It cited a strong demand ...

Governments have given the final rubber stamp to new rules on the functioning on the EU’s internal market for electricity, which aim to limit the dramatic price surges and windfall profits seen during the 2022 energy crisis. The pricing model used for spot sales of electricity meant power prices tracked the soaring cost of gas in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leading to high prices for end users and huge profits for electricity firms, especially for renewable wind, solar or hydro power where marginal costs are close to zero. Under a revised market regulation, the essential model re...

Bosnia is home to hundreds of thousands of bee colonies, mainly looked after by small-scale beekeepers. But climate change is threatening the survival of their hives as the insects struggle to find nectar supplies. Beekeepers are having to radically rethink traditions and conventional cycles of foraging and honey collection. Some are also calling for greater financial support from the Bosnian government to protect long-standing practices and knowledge. Bosnia’s beekeepers battle climate changeBosnia has a rich beekeeping tradition. Its diverse climate and flora are ideal for the production of ...

Spain is bracing itself for another blistering summer, after two record hot years. Copernicus, the EU’s climate service, says there is an up to 70 per cent chance that this summer will be one of the hottest 20 per cent on record for the country. Last year was the hottest globally since records began, as the world breached the 1.5C global heating limit set by the Paris Agreement for a whole year for the first time. 2022 remains Europe’s hottest year yet, spurred by a significant number of heatwaves, which in Spain claimed around 11,300 lives. To save lives this year, Spain’s Ministry of Health ...

170 European Bison reintroduced to Romania’s Țarcu mountains could help capture and store the carbon released by up to 84,000 average US petrol cars each year. New research from Yale University, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, suggests these massive herbivores could have a role to play in mitigating the impact of climate change. By grazing a 48 square kilometre area of grassland in a wider landscape of 300 kilometres squared, they helped to capture an additional 54,000 tonnes of carbon each year. That is around 10 times the amount that would be captured by the ecosystem without the bison...
