Spain is bracing itself for another blistering summer, after two record hot years. Copernicus, the EU’s climate service, says there is an up to 70 per cent chance that this summer will be one of the hottest 20 per cent on record for the country. Last year was the hottest globally since records began, as the world breached the 1.5C global heating limit set by the Paris Agreement for a whole year for the first time. 2022 remains Europe’s hottest year yet, spurred by a significant number of heatwaves, which in Spain claimed around 11,300 lives. To save lives this year, Spain’s Ministry of Health ...

170 European Bison reintroduced to Romania’s Țarcu mountains could help capture and store the carbon released by up to 84,000 average US petrol cars each year. New research from Yale University, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, suggests these massive herbivores could have a role to play in mitigating the impact of climate change. By grazing a 48 square kilometre area of grassland in a wider landscape of 300 kilometres squared, they helped to capture an additional 54,000 tonnes of carbon each year. That is around 10 times the amount that would be captured by the ecosystem without the bison...

In parts of Spain, flies are making life hell for residents. Tomiño, a municipality in the province of Pontevedra in the autonomous community of Galicia, has had a sudden influx of common flies. The moment they hatch, they go looking for food and are often attracted to smells from people’s homes. Mayor Sandra González told local news that, while the insects don’t spread disease, they are “deteriorating the psychological health” of the people suffering from the outbreak of pests. She says the situation requires a coordinated response from authorities in the area to tackle the causes behind the ...

EU's foremost policymakers are gathering in Brussels today (16 May) to discuss the artificial intelligence, the green transition, and the impact of the bloc's enlargement. The Brussels Economic Forum, organised by the European Commission, begins at 11am, with prime ministers, MEPs, and officials addressing topics like innovation, climate change and sluggish growth. Forecasts published on Tuesday suggest the bloc might be about to turn the corner after years ravaged by the affects of the pandemic, the Ukraine war, and high inflation. This year, the Forum takes place as Europeans prepare to go t...

Scientists are urging European governments to take action as climate change takes hold, increasing heat-related deaths across the continent. Europe is the fastest-warming continent with temperatures rising roughly twice the global average, according to recently published reports from the World Meteorological Organisation and the EU's climate agency Copernicus. A group of public health experts and statisticians from institutions across Europe have created models to analyse how temperature extremes can change the risk of mortality based on the effects of climate change over the past two decades....

A detailed analysis of ancient Antarctic ice has revealed that carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are rising 10 times faster than at any point in the past 50,000 years. Researchers at Oregon State University in the US and the University of St Andrews in Scotland looked at samples of ice collected by drilling cores up to 3.2km deep. Ice has built up in the Antarctic over hundreds of thousands of years and includes atmospheric gasses trapped in air bubbles inside of this ice. Scientists look for trace elements in samples of this ice to build a record of what the climate was like in the past...

By Tony Frangie Mawad CARACAS, Venezuela — In early March, a series of wildfires ravaged the savannas of Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the southeastern state of Bolivar, bordering the Venezuelan Amazon, and reached the Auyantepui, one of the park’s iconic, billion-year-old tabletop mountains, or tepuis, known for their unique mountain ecosystems. For days, the fires, which local environmentalists later reported began as a forest clearance attempt by a local Indigenous community, ravaged around 1,100 hectares (about 2,720 acres) on the Auyantepui. According to local rep...

Officials have said London’s flood defence walls will need to be half a metre higher in the future to protect against climate change. The announcement came as they marked the 40th anniversary of the Thames Barrier, which defends the capital against flooding. Though initially intended to protect London until 2030, the moveable barrier and the city’s wider flood defences will function until 2070, the UK’s Environment Agency expects. But sea levels are projected to rise by around a metre by 2100 and storms are becoming increasingly intense due to climate change. This, officials have said, means g...

The Catalonia region is set to ease restrictions on water use for a wide area, including its capital Barcelona, after recent rainfall palliated a prolonged drought, authorities have announced. In February, Catalonia declared a drought emergency when its reservoirs fell to under 16 per cent capacity after nearly three years of below-average rainfall. Steady rain in recent weeks, however, has boosted reserves to nearly 25 per cent. Spain's reservoirs overall are at a far more promising 66 per cent full. The loosened restrictions mean that some 6 million people will now see individual use limits ...
