Pau Esteban was trying to explain the dangers faced by one of Europe’s biggest protected wetlands from the expansion of Barcelona’s airport when the roar of jet engines drowned him out. It perfectly summed up the battle which is raging between private ambitions to expand the city’s airport and public anger at how this may destroy a sanctuary for flora and fauna protected by the European Commission. Who will win may depend as much by decisions taken in Brussels as among politicians and locals in the Spanish city. The dilemma between private and public is one of the debates at the centre of Mani...

The text of the law was agreed in back-room ‘trilogue’ talks in November, and adopted by the parliament last month. But the EU Council presidency holder Belgium, which is itself abstaining, has been unable to muster the necessary majority among governments to give the law the final rubber stamp, with half a d...

Dozens of tractors and hundreds of farmers returned to Madrid on Sunday denouncing the European Union's agricultural politics. Organisers claimed that 1,000 people attended the protest, but the government counted 450 farmers as attending. The march started at the Ministry of Ecology Transition and ended outside the Agriculture Ministry headquarters, symbolising the two main concerns of farmers: extensive bureaucracy and "eco" measures. Some farmers carried banners reading: “No to 2030 agenda”, meaning the EU's "Green Transition". Protesters claim that policies dictated by the European Union ai...

By Claudia Geib The yellow-legged hornet is a predator: after it sets up a nest in a new neighborhood, its workers head out in search of smaller wasps, flies and bees to feed the hive’s growing brood. One of its favorite snacks is honey bees. Lingering outside a hive, these hornets, Vespa velutina, capture flying honey bees mid-air, stopping on their way home only to chew the bee up into pellets to feed their young. In the hornets’ native range across Southeast Asia, local bee species have evolved defenses against the yellow-legged hornet’s attacks. But in Europe and the United States, native ...

Washington (AFP) - In 1997, a lone wolf crossed an ice bridge that briefly connected Canada with the remote Isle Royale, which lies off the coast of Michigan in Lake Superior and is renowned for its rich biodiversity. His arrival revived the flagging fortunes of the wider wolf population, which had been hit by disease and inbreeding, and triggered cascading effects that improved the health of the overall forest ecosystem, a study in Science Advances showed Wednesday. "Issues like inbreeding and low genetic diversity are an important concern for scientists," first author Sarah Hoy, an ecologist...
