Researchers at the University of Bristol have developed a robotic suction cup prototype that is much stronger than current industrial solutions. It can grab onto rough, curved, and heavy objects like stones. The scientists were inspired by the way natural organisms, such as octopuses, can stick to rocks with their suckers. “We know that in nature there are so many soft-bodied organisms, for example, octopuses and snails and some kind of fishes, they can adaptively suck onto irregular surfaces,” said Tianqi Yue, a robotics researcher at the University of Bristol. Yue says all around us nature h...

The HCOB Eurozone construction purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for March came out on Friday morning, clocking in at 42.4, according to S&P Global. This was a fall from February’s 42.9 and was mostly due to a significant fall in housing activity. A major reduction in new business, caused mainly by dampened demand, also resulted in more jobs being slashed, as well as some budget tightening. This was reflected in less subcontractors being used, as well as fewer raw and input materials being purchased. Civil and commercial engineering companies saw ongoing reductions in activity, with March comme...

The world's most famous unfinished building may finally be completed after architects said that the basilica would be finished by 2026, marking the centenary of the death of the Sagrada Familia's creator, Antoní Gaudí. Esteve Camps, the president of the organisation in charge of realising the original masterplan of Gaudí, said the building should be completed within two years, some 144 years after the first stone was laid on the site. If the deadline is reached, the basilica would include the 172.5-metre central tower dedicated to Jesus Christ, making the Sagrada Familia Barcelona’s tallest bu...

Another month, another climate record topples. February saw global air temperatures break records, while sea surface temperatures were also at the highest ever recorded, according to scientists at the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. Meanwhile, the world’s carbon dioxide emissions from energy continued to rise in 2023. The physical consequences of climate change — storms, floods, fires, extreme heat — are affecting communities rich and poor across the planet. Real estate and the buildings around us are on the frontline of this challenge. The built world is the biggest contributor to glo...

Europe's largest economy may have already slid into a recession, according to Germany's central bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank. This is mainly due to a number of factors such as dampened construction activity, strikes and falling foreign demand. The news comes after the German economy saw a fall of 0.3% in the last quarter of 2023. Looking forward to expectations for the current quarter, the Bundesbank said in its monthly report that "stress factors would probably remain in the first quarter" which would mean "economic output could therefore decline again slightly in the first quarter of 2024"....

In digital projections, the White Tower of Mulegns looks like something straight out of a science-fiction film. Surrounded by the snowy peaks of the Swiss Alps, the wispy ivory tower rises up from a valley like an ancient tree. Much like a tree, its structure is strong enough to withstand the cold winters and powerful winds that characterise the mountain pass. Equal parts concert hall, art installation and monument, the 30 metre-high abstract construction will become the tallest 3D-printed structure in the world upon completion, which is scheduled for June. Architect Lesley Lokko becomes first...
