Consumer confidence in Germany is edging up, according to the newly released German GfK Consumer Climate Indicator for May. German consumer confidence came in at -24.2, a rise from the -27.3 of April and better than market expectations of -25.9, according to the GfK Group. The figure is the highest in two years, boosted mainly by income expectations jumping to their highest number since January 2022, at 10.7 against -1.5 in the previous month. German consumer sentiment could potentially be on the road to recovery, despite the country recently being battered by soaring prices and lacklustre economic prospects. The German GfK Consumer Climate Indicator for March, released by the GfK Group, came out on Tuesday, clocking in at -29.0, in line with market expectations. Europe's largest economy may have already slid into a recession, according to Germany's central bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank. This is mainly due to a number of factors such as dampened construction activity, strikes and falling foreign demand. The news comes after the German economy saw a fall of 0.3% in the last quarter of 2023. Looking forward to expectations for the current quarter, the Bundesbank said in its monthly report that "stress factors would probably remain in the first quarter" which would mean "economic output could therefore decline again slightly in the first quarter of 2024"....
