Artificial intelligence will change how we go for e-bike rides in future, according to one major manufacturer that has unveiled a means to use this emerging software to rule out range issues and find more comfortable routes in battery-assisted bicycles. At the Eurobike bicycle fair in Frankfurt, German technology company Bosch presented a new AI solution called Range Control designed to make planning tours with e-bikes easier. The navigation software uses AI to "learn" from live data, while taking into account various parameters such as the total weight, the route's elevation profile and indiv...

Biniam Girmay has made history by becoming the first Black African to win a Tour de France stage. The Eritrean rider sprinted to glory in the third stage of the race, on Monday, crossing the line in the northern Italian city of Turin. He said his win was “for all Africans.” "We must be proud now. We are really part of the big races,” he added. “Now it’s our moment. It’s our time.” He'd already entered the records' books two years ago, when he won a stage at the Giro d’Italia to become the first Black African to take a victory in a Grand Tour, a term that encompasses the three major three-week ...

The first stage of the Tour de France cycling race began on Saturday in Florence, in neighbouring Italy, and was to finish in Rimini after the rider have cycled 206 kilometres between the two cities. Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard won the legendary race last year for the second time in a row, but this year all eyes are on his main rival Polish rider Tadej Pogačar, who won in 2020 and 2021. The duel between the two may become the highlight of this year's race. When both men faced off in the heat of July last year, the main question mark was whether Pogacar would be fit enough to mount a decent c...

The proportion of German cyclists wearing helmets rose to 44% in 2023, up from 40% the year before, according to a study compiled by the federal road transport authority (BASt) and published on Sunday. The rise continued a trend, the BASt, based in Bergisch Gladbach to the east of Cologne, said. In 2020, barely a quarter of cyclists wore helmets, and in 2010, the figure was just 9%. The authority did not suggest a reason for the increase. The survey is based on observations conducted in the same six regions ever year with the aim of arriving at a standardized assessment. The observations in 20...

Russian cyclist Alexandr Vlasov will not participate in the Paris Olympics road race, state news agency TASS quoted the nation's federation chief, Viatcheslav Ekimov, as saying. Ekimov said that Vlasov considers the Olympic course profile not suitable for him to get a good result, while also citing a full competition calendar. Vlasov, 28, is among a small number of Russians and Belarusians who have been declared eligible to compete at the July 26-August 11 Paris Games as neutrals and under strict criteria, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Vlasov had criticized the invasion when it start...

It’s a beautiful day for it. The sun bounces off the white squares of the picnic cloth which runs from the Arc de Triomphe to Avenue George V. Traffic lights are still turning from red to green, conducting no one. Elodie and her partner are among 4,000 lucky ticket-holders to the free grand pique-nique des Champs-Élysées held on 26 May. They’re enjoying the novelty of relaxing on the road that they usually cycle down for work, dodging cars and selfie-absorbed tourists. “We are Parisian, and this is a place we have been driven out of,” says the 51-year-old writer. “It’s not a museum, not Emily ...

When I was first invited to cycle Finland’s Puumala Archipelago Ring Road, I eagerly accepted. Despite being a little rusty, I convinced myself that 60 kilometres on an e-bike would be a breeze. And it was - until 55 kilometres in. Despite rigorously conserving the battery for the final hills, the bike began to slow and jolt. Then, the horror: my battery suddenly died completely. Left by the roadside, I pushed the bike uphill, accompanied only by a few curious cows watching my slow progress. Although thoroughly enjoyable, my first cycling adventure in Saimaa Lakeland left a nagging feeling. I ...
