The proportion of German cyclists wearing helmets rose to 44% in 2023, up from 40% the year before, according to a study compiled by the federal road transport authority (BASt) and published on Sunday. The rise continued a trend, the BASt, based in Bergisch Gladbach to the east of Cologne, said. In 2020, barely a quarter of cyclists wore helmets, and in 2010, the figure was just 9%. Russian cyclist Alexandr Vlasov will not participate in the Paris Olympics road race, state news agency TASS quoted the nation's federation chief, Viatcheslav Ekimov, as saying. An alliance of several transport associations has called on the German government to provide greater support for cycling and sustainable mobility. In a paper published in Berlin on Monday the associations representing car-sharing schemes, cyclists and public transport companies say Germany needs "equal conditions on the roads for all modes of transport.
