Voters in Czech Republic, where immigration was a key issue on the campaign trail, took to the polls Friday on the second day of the elections for the European Parliament. Final results will not be released until Sunday night, once voting is completed in every country. In the election campaign, the far-right and far-left were united over the condemnation of the EU's plans to tackle immigration and climate change, as well as their strong opposition against military support for Ukraine. Former populist Prime Minister Andrej Babis and his centrist ANO (YES) movement campaigned under the headline ...

A passenger train has collided head-on with a freight train in the Czech Republic. At least four people were killed and 23 others injured, officials said early Thursday. The crash took place late Wednesday night in the city of Pardubice, some 100 kilometers east of Prague, according to Interior Minister Vít Rakušan. Germany has announced it will drop a gas storage fee introduced during the energy crisis of 2022, after eastern EU members warned the increased cost of imports from the west was forcing their continued reliance on Russian gas. The launch of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine saw Moscow weaponise gas supplies on which the EU, and Germany in particular, were heavily reliant. Berlin introduced the storage levy in October that year to partly offset the cost of stockpiling from alternative suppliers as wholesale prices rocketed ahead of winter. “It was never our intention to hamper the diversific...

So far the West has refrained from allowing its weapons to be used for that purpose for fear of escalating the conflict into a wider war with Russia, but the issue is increasingly divisive. Unlike Germany or the US, French president Emmanuel Macron has vocally supported lifting the restriction...

This unusual Easter-time ritual takes place in just 28 villages in Czechia's Pardubice Region. The eldest boy in each village dresses up in a straw suit and is marched in a procession through the village. The tradition is known as "Vodění Jidáše" and is loosely translated to "Marching Judas". Some say this ritual was first documented as early as 1893 although no one knows exactly where it came from. According to Euronews correspondent Jiri Skacel, the burning is related to magic and a religious understanding of nature. "It's a kind of springtime personal cleansing," he adds. In 2015 the Czechi...

The Czech authorities reported that there were 28 registered cases of whooping cough in the first week of January. That figure now stands at 3,084 – a number not seen since 1963. The highest rate of the illness is among 15 to 19-year-olds, who account for about one-third of the patients. According to Czech Health Minister Vlastimil Válek, the surge is likely attributable to a mix of a resurgence in respiratory diseases as society shifts away from stringent Covid measures, and incomplete immunization among children. Whooping cough is a highly infectious bacterial disease that affects the lungs ...
