The United Arab Emirates (UAE) lashed out on Saturday at a suggestion from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to join a potential civil administration in the post-war Gaza Strip. Netanyahu suggested in a recent interview that a civilian administration with Gazans and possibly with the aid of the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other countries could run Gaza after the war. On Saturday, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed said his country denounces Netanyahu's call, adding that Gaza is currently under Israeli occupation. "The State of Emirates stresses that the Israeli prime minister has no leg...

Washington (AFP) - President Joe Biden said Wednesday he would stop US weapons supplies to Israel if it attacks Rafah in southern Gaza, his most direct warning to date over the prosecution of the war against Hamas. In an interview with CNN Biden also deplored the fact that civilians had been killed by the dropping of US bombs on the Palestinian territory. His fresh warning came after the US last week halted a shipment of huge American bombs to Israel as it appeared ready to proceed with a major attack on Rafah -- a city packed with Palestinian civilians sheltering near the Egyptian border. "If...

Guatemala City (AFP) - Washington is redoubling efforts to disrupt irregular migration, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday at regional talks in Guatemala, as the hot-button issue looms large once again over US elections in November. Blinken led the US delegation at a meeting in the Guatemalan capital of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection, a cooperation framework agreed to at a summit in California in 2022. The United States has "stepped up efforts against those preying on vulnerable migrants," notably those flying people from Asia, Africa and elsewhere to Centr...

France accused Iran of arbitrarily detaining several French citizens and holding them hostage and demanded their release, in a statement on Tuesday. The French Foreign Ministry demanded the immediate and unconditional release of two French tourists detained in Iran two years ago on espionage charges. They have been held there ever since. Paris also called for the release of two other French citizens detained by Tehran. "France condemns this state hostage policy and the constant blackmail by the Iranian authorities," the French ministry said. "France condemns the Islamic Republic's abhorrent pr...

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden, seeking to push a Gaza ceasefire, on Monday warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against invading Rafah as Israel defiantly issued evacuation orders and carried out intense air strikes on the crowded Gaza city. The United States said it was reviewing a response from Hamas, which said it has accepted a deal to halt seven months of war and free hostages, with CIA Director Bill Burns in the region to negotiate through Arab allies. Biden told Netanyahu in April that invading Rafah would be a "mistake," and Secretary of State Antony Blinken told him la...

Washington (AFP) - An American soldier was detained in Russia last week on charges of "criminal misconduct," the US Army said Monday. The soldier -- whose name was not released -- adds to the number of Americans held in Russia at a time of deep tensions with Washington over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. "On May 2, 2024, Russian authorities in Vladivostok, Russia, detained an American soldier on charges of criminal misconduct," US Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said. Russia notified the US State Department, which is "providing appropriate consular support to the soldier in Russia," and the Army...
