High levels of immigration have failed to enhance the economy and have worsened the housing crisis in the UK, according to a new report from the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS). The study by the centre-right think-tank, was co-authored by former immigration minister Robert Jenrick. It argues that about 89% of the 1.34 million rise in England's housing deficit over the last decade has been due to net migration. Additionally, 67% of private rented households in London are headed by individuals born overseas, as were 33% of new social housing placements in the London borough of Brent in 2022/23. ...

Guatemala City (AFP) - Washington is redoubling efforts to disrupt irregular migration, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday at regional talks in Guatemala, as the hot-button issue looms large once again over US elections in November. Blinken led the US delegation at a meeting in the Guatemalan capital of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection, a cooperation framework agreed to at a summit in California in 2022. The United States has "stepped up efforts against those preying on vulnerable migrants," notably those flying people from Asia, Africa and elsewhere to Centr...

Washington (AFP) - Illegal immigration on the US southern border is a top talking point among Republican politicians, but some are taking it a step further by promoting disinformation about non-citizens voting in the presidential election. With the election possibly to be decided by several thousand votes in battleground states, social media has filled up with allegations that foreigners are entering the country to swing the poll in favor of President Joe Biden. AFP has extensively debunked those claims in both English and Spanish, explaining that non-citizens cannot vote in federal elections ...

European Union auditors said on Wednesday that they are unable to establish whether some of the billions of euros the bloc has given to Turkey to help it cope with Syrian refugees is actually having any impact. Under a deal concluded between EU leaders and Turkey in 2016, the bloc committed to provide at least €6 billion to Turkey to help it cope with migrants crossing in from Syria. Turkey in turn committed to stop migrants leaving its territory for Europe. In March 2016, a month after the deal came into effect, Turkey's government said the number of migrants crossing illegally into Greece ha...

The European Union's General Court has partially annulled a decision by the EU border agency, Frontex, to refuse a German search-and-rescue organization access to documents on an air surveillance mission. Frontex had refused a freedom of information request from Sea-Watch for documents related to an air operation the border agency conducted in the Mediterranean Sea on July 30, 2021. It justified the refusal on public security grounds. The EU General Court on Wednesday partially annulled that refusal: while it rejected most of Sea-Watch's arguments, it found that Frontex had failed to mention i...

Palominas (United States) (AFP) - John Ladd, who says he could ride a horse before he could walk, is a fourth-generation rancher from a family that arrived in Arizona when the border between Mexico and the United States was just a line on the map. Now he views that frontier -- and the thousands of people who spill across it every day -- as a threat to his whole way of life. "It rules how we run the ranch now, and that isn't the most effective way," he told AFP. Ladd's sprawling cattle farm runs right up against the wall that -- at least in this stretch -- separates Mexico from the United State...

"Er stellt eine weitere Aushöhlung der Grundrechte und die Normalisierung der digitalen Überwachung an und innerhalb der Grenzen dar, gerechtfertigt d...
