The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a global warning about falsified injections of semaglutide, a blockbuster weight-loss drug that is used to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes. The medical alert concerned three falsified batches of the injection, known by its brand name Ozempic, which was found in Brazil, the UK, and the US in 2023. "WHO advises healthcare professionals, regulatory authorities and the public be aware of these falsified batches of medicines," said Dr Yukiko Nakatani, WHO's assistant director-general for access to medicines and health products. On one level, The Bikeriders is a movie about a Midwest motorcycle club, the Chicago Vandals, in the late 1960s and the early 1970s, as it grows and expands and eventually loses its way. But step back a bit and it's easy to see the film as a referendum on American counterculture and radical outsider movements more generally: In the movie's tragic vision, these movements start as something pure and communal and free of the pathologies of the wider world. But eventually, as they grow, they become ugly, empty, cynical, and cruel, torn apart by power struggles and depravity. Enjoy the good things ...

For more than a decade, patients who've needed certain controlled medications have suffered from ill-advised, untenable policies the U.S. government has instituted, allegedly to mitigate the ever-surging numbers of drug overdose deaths. These policies have been a dismal failure on multiple fronts: Not only have deaths continued to surge, but the terrifying intrusion of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) into the practice of medicine has had a chilling effect on patients and their physicians. As the DEA relentlessly tightens production quotas on medications for pain and ADHD, it has begu...

Many countries have been experiencing increasing medicine shortages, with the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating the problem. In the US, active drug shortages hit an all-time high of 323 in this year’s first quarter, according to the University of Utah Drug Information Service, up around 86 per cent from a 10-year low of 174 last reached in 2017. A statement last week from the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU), meanwhile, highlighted doctors' and pharmacists' concerns about a rise in drug shortages in Europe. The group's annual survey also found that drug shortages affected all Eur...

Washington (AFP) - The governor of the US state of Maryland issued a mass pardon of drug offenses on Monday, in a far-reaching move forgiving 175,000 low-level marijuana convictions across multiple decades. Democrat Wes Moore said his act -- "the most sweeping state-level pardon" in American history -- was aimed at addressing social and economic injustices disproportionately impacting tens of thousands of Black people. Moore, the eastern state's first Black governor, said he intended to right the "decades of harm" wrought by drug policy that had disproportionately targeted African Americans, d...

Inflation cooled slightly to 3.3 percent in May, the Department of Labor reported on Wednesday morning. That's a welcome sign that tees up the possibility the Federal Reserve will signal plans to cut interest rates later today. A rare one-two punch of economic news that will indicate whether the fight against inflation is being won makes Wednesday one of the most important days of the year for economic news, CNBC reports. This morning's consumer price report from the Department of Labor was an encouraging sign, and all eyes now turn to this afternoon's decision by the central bank's officials....

A panel of advisers to US health regulators backed a drug to slow Alzheimer's disease on Monday setting the stage for its expected approval for patients at an early stage of the disease. The advisers voted unanimously that the drug's benefits outweighed its risks, which include side effects like brain swelling and bleeding that will have to be monitored. "I thought the evidence was very strong in the trial showing the effectiveness of the drug," said panel member Dean Follmann, a National Institutes of Health statistician. The drug, donanemab, is from pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and has b...

Health authorities in Europe warned of an increase in drug resistance for gonorrhoea that could limit treatment options for the infection. Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by bacteria and often has no symptoms. If left untreated, it can cause serious problems such as pelvic inflammatory disease or infertility. In a new surveillance report for 2022, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) warned that two isolates of the STD were resistant to the common antibiotic ceftriaxone which is used to treat it. Nearly 4,400 gonorrhoea isolates from 23 Europe...
