Image by Arzu Geybullayeva, Canva. Summer wildfires have become a usual norm in Turkey. Every year, forests, residential rural settlements and agricultural land burn to the ground as a result. But just as the fires have become a norm, so has the criticism of the state, for its failure to invest and improve its first response infrastructure, quick intervention, and faster dispatch of rescuers. Experts say while climate change or excessive weather conditions may have had a role to play, these crises were also an outcome of poor planning and incorrect decisions made at the government level. Windrush Generation Arrived From 1948 — City of Westminster Green Plaque at Paddington Station. Photo by Spudgun67 via Wikimedia Commons(CC BY-SA 4.0). June 22 is Windrush Day in the United Kingdom, and it marks the contributions of hundreds of Black Caribbean economic migrants who began arriving on the HMT Empire Windrush in 1948. Those contributions, however, were rife with struggle. West Indians who came to the “mother country” were met with less than a warm welcome, not simply from the weather, but from white Brits who opposed this budding multiracial society. The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, which manages the second biggest school district in the country, ordered staff to devise a plan to prohibit cell phones and social media throughout the school day. "Schools that have...alre...
