Most of us today are familiar with rewilding - the concept of bringing nature back in certain areas, restoring lost ecosystems and biodiversity to a healthier state. It’s conservation work that’s often attached to the idea of “letting nature take care of itself”, with minimal human interference. But is less human intervention always better? Or the most realistic approach on a 21st-century planet, home to 8.1 billion people? Not necessarily. In some cases, a human touch can not only be helpful in designing rewilded ecosystems but also remain a vital part of them. Perhaps because we’re so used t...

Two out of three meals per day – that’s how often Simon Johansson, CEO of Nordic Seafarm, eats seaweed. To promote this unusual ingredient, his company in Sweden provided seaweed for this year's Nobel Prize dinner. “We grow sugar kelp and sea lettuce," he explains in this episode of Ocean Calls. "And the king of Sweden ate it, right? And he looked quite happy on TV.” Nordic Seafarm was created by marine biologists in 2016. Their main goal was to examine the environmental impact of large-scale seaweed farming on ocean health but also create a working business model. While many associate seaweed...

Growing up, Teresa Vicente spent long days in Spain's Mar Menor swimming in transparent waters, cupping seahorses in her hands and partying under the moonlit sky. Out there, she recalled, time stood still. But over the decades, chronic contamination from mining, development and agricultural runoff turned the once crystal-clear waters of Europe's largest saltwater lagoon into a graveyard. A mass fish die-off in 2019 prompted the professor of philosophy of law at the University of Murcia to take action. Over the next several years, Vicente, now 61, led a grassroots campaign to save the region's ...

Dozens of protesters demonstrated in the northern Italian city of Turin on Sunday, blocking a highway and setting fire to images of world leaders. The demonstrators claimed that the G7 leaders were failing to meet their climate demands, as well as failing future generations over climate change. Rome, which is currently holding the G7 rotating presidency, has said that the meeting in Turin is to be the strategic link between last year's COP28 in Dubai and the next conference, which will be held in Azerbaijan in November. Environment ministers from the G7, which includes countries such as Canada...

Luxembourg is famous as the only country in the world to offer free public transport - and now it’s set to expand its reach. Since 2020, all buses, trains and trams have been free of charge throughout the micronation and a new pilot scheme will offer commuters who live in French municipalities bordering Luxembourg the same benefits. The service, which will operate during peak hours in the morning and evening, will extend to thousands of commuters who live in France and work in the Grand Duchy. Currently, commuters can only take advantage of Luxembourg’s free transport when they reach the borde...

Imagine if policymakers, businesses, and society had access to a virtual twin copy of our oceans to explore? This AI tool could simulate realistic what-if scenarios based on scientific knowledge. Would that help protect and restore our oceans by enabling better decision-making? As the EU is preparing to launch the Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO), the European scientific community thinks it could be a game-changing project. "Think of artificial intelligence as a tool that helps us to predict and understand what is going on in the ocean," says Joanna Staneva, a physicist at the Helmholtz-Zentrum...

Ten years ago, I stood with then US Secretary of State John Kerry in the spectacular Sant Ocean Hall at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC to discuss an issue that we both hold dear: the state of the world’s oceans. Before that week in 2014, no one had gathered world leaders, funders, non-profits, and academics together under one roof to dedicate time to solving some of the greatest threats facing our oceans. That all changed when Secretary Kerry created Our Ocean – an annual international conference that will meet this week, for the ninth time, in Athens, Gre...

Following her recent win at the Oscars for the Barbie ballad ‘What Was I Made For?’ (and thereby becoming the youngest person to have won two Oscars at the age of 22), Billie Eilish has announced that her highly anticipated third studio album, 'Hit Me Hard and Soft', will be released on 17 May. The news arrived via Instagram, where Eilish shared the striking album artwork showing the pop singer underwater with an open door above her. In the caption, she wrote that she will not drop singles in advance of the release. “I wanna give it to you all at once,” she captioned the image. “I truly could ...

MEPs have given a green light to proposed new rules designed to reduce and prevent microplastic pollution, but tweaked the European Commission’s proposal so that the measures would also cover maritime transport. The parliament’s environment (ENVI) committee voted on March 19 on a report prepared by MEP Joāo Albuquerque (Portugal/S&D) with 71 votes in favour and five against, following a proposal by the EU executive tabled in October last year, which only considered river transportation. Up to 180,000 tonnes of pellets are estimated to be released into the environment every year, with many of t...
