The grounds of the Fondation Carmignac are a unique mix of art and nature. Situated on the southern French island of Porquerolles, it’s home to some amazing sculptures celebrating the feminine form. Now, within the walls of its Villa, women are the centrepiece of its latest exhibition. Curated by Alona Pardo, ‘The Infinite Woman’ combines works from the Carmignac collection with the work of more than 60 pioneering artists. From the past to the present and the future, visions of myths and magic are mixed with complex or surreal depictions of sorcery and sexuality. But that's not all by any mean...

When planning a city break, the modern traveler may consider a number of factors. Are the hotels top-notch? Will there be any sunshine? Are there good places to grab a delicious bite? And importantly, what is there to do around town? Art, style, and architecture massively affect our decisions on where we go; hence why new museums, galleries, and exhibitions are constantly vying for visitors in Europe’s major cities. In fact, cultural tourism constitutes around 40% of all European tourism. But have you ever wondered which city tops the list for art aficionados seeking to satisfy their cultural ...

In troubled times, there's something about Mark Rothko's art that provides respite. His iconic rectangular colour fields - vibrant empty spaces, layered with texture - absorb our focus and allow our feelings to meander in oddly reassuring ways. Perhaps this is why Rothko is having such a resurgence in Europe right now. Last year, the Louis Vuitton Foundation presented the first retrospective in France dedicated to his works since 1999. Now, it's Norway's turn: a fascinating new exhibition dedicated to the 20th century abstract artist's lesser-known works on paper opens at the National Museum i...

There's an old myth that says "you leave a bit of your soul in everything you crochet," adding: "To avoid this, you should always work in a hidden mistake so that your soul can escape.” While a welcome joke for all those "hookers" that have spent many an infuriating hour unravelling yarn, the idea of people leaving a part of themselves in their crafts feels very true. From the ceramic mugs we drink our coffee in, to the teak tables we rest said mugs on (hopefully using a coaster), all craftsmanship has a deeply personal connection that sensualises and shapes the very fabric of our lives. Londo...

Another week, another roundup of exciting things happening across Europe! Let's dive straight in. Exhibitions'Silvia Bächli: Partitura' at Centro Botín' (Santander, Spain) If minimal and conceptual artworks are your cup of tea, then you must check out Swiss artist Silvia Bächli's first exhibition in Spain at Centro Botín, which features her latest works alongside earlier drawings. Bächli's abstract and minimal drawings are deeply intertwined with her body's movements, reflecting sensory experiences and bodily gestures. “Drawings are actions. Lines tell stories. What do these lines do? Where is...

When the Nazis decided to wade into the Spanish Civil War in 1937 in support of their fascist ally Francisco Franco, they did so by dropping bombs indiscriminately on the Basque town of Guernica. No distinction was made by those flying overhead between civilians and militants: many hundreds died, most of them women and children. It was a bitter foretaste of what was to come. In the years which followed, civilian bombing became a hallmark of the changing face of modern warfare, the term blitzkrieg soon entering international parlance. Sotheby's unveils masterpieces by Monet, Picasso, and Bacon ...

Happy May! And may it be filled with many a cool cultural plan. As anticipation builds for Cannes 2024 (Messi, the dog from Anatomy of a Fall, will be filming his own show at the festival FYI) there's also the fashion mecca that is 2024's Met Gala, the Eurovision Song Contest, the ongoing Venice Biennale and much, much more in store for the rest of the month. This week, we're perhaps most excited about a Kimono exhibition opening in Scotland, Ryan Gosling's fun new action movie The Fall Guy, and listening to Dua Lipa's latest album, 'Radical Optimism' \- a thing we try to channel in these dige...

The “Light in Life” exhibition will take place on the 132-hectare site and will be open from May 4 to September 29. The sculptures, made mostly of stainless steel, are spread across vegetation’s Kew to reflect the greenery of the site. Quinn says: ’Kew approached me to do something and I came down, and I hadn't been for a long time. And when I came here and realised that they have hundreds of scientists doing research and horticulturists and I spent more and more time here, I realised that there was a whole show to do here, so we worked together to do that.’ The exhibition aims to attract more...

I’ve seen Picasso’s "Guernica". I’ve stood in front of Michelangelo’s David. I’ve found myself in a trance when faced with Francis Bacon’s “Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X”. But I’d never seen anything quite like the immersive Klimt exhibition. I experienced it during a recent visit to Warsaw. After having sampled the many culinary joys of Poland’s capital (which are numerous and yummy), I ended up at the Klimt event after having been somewhat duped by guides and online reviews to visit the Soho Factory in the old post-industrial area in Praga – Warsaw's east riverside “alt...

Well, there goes another eventful week. Mona Lisa is moving, AI beauty pageants are a thing, and there's also a new Eminem album on the horizon. Yet none of these announcements could detract from what the internet really cares about right now: Challengers. Yes, Luca Guadagnino's new film, a titillating tennis-themed loved triangle starring Zendaya, is out at cinemas and serving memes (and thirst posts) left, right and centre (more on this below.) Away from all that racket, here's what else is happening around Europe to love. ExhibitionVenice biennale 2024 The 60th edition of the Venice Biennal...
