The union that represents most behind-the-scenes film and television crews in the US has reached a tentative deal with studios for about 50,000 of its members, making another major, production-stopping strike unlikely after a year of labour turmoil in Hollywood. The two sides announced the three-year deal in a joint statement last night (Tuesday 25 June). The union, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, said in an email to members, who still must vote to approve the deal, that the agreement includes the pay hikes and artificial intelligence protections they had been vying f...

There are persistent rumours that an upcoming English-language remake of Netflix’s hit show Squid Game is on the way, with David Fincher (Se7en, The Social Network, The Killer) slated to direct. Fincher’s project has writer Dennis Kelly (Utopia, Matilda The Musical) working on the script, and while the pairing of Fincher and the South Korean hit drama looks good on paper - the director having previously dived into remake territory (the US version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) and having an unparalleled knack for delving into both physical and psychological violence - some eyebrows are be...

Cannes (France) (AFP) - Sienna Miller was such a huge fan of Kevin Costner's films when growing up that she named her pet rabbits after animals in "Dances With Wolves". Now she is starring alongside Costner in his ambitious film series "Horizon: An American Saga" -- a four-part project that he mortgaged his home to fund. The first two instalments -- each some three hours long -- hit cinemas this summer, with the first released on June 28. Miller, 42, said she remained star-struck. "I'm a child of the 90s. I can still barely look at Kevin, because he was such a huge part of my childhood," sh...

It's officially summer! Whether you're enjoying the Euros, Pride partying, prepping for festivals or eating lots of ice cream, the brighter evenings and (hopefully) warmer days ahead feel full of possibilities. New art is everywhere and the cinema box office is, in the slightly misquoted words of fictional dog-avenger John Wick, "thinking it's back" following the success of Pixar's Inside Out 2. Like your cool friend that always knows what's up, here are our cultural recommendations for the week. Exhibitions'Naomi: In Fashion' at the V&A Museum (London, UK) Naomi Campbell is one of the world's...

I had the pleasure of meeting Donald Sutherland at the Venice Film Festival in 2019. He was attending the event for the closing film of the 76th edition, Giuseppe Capotondi’s underrated crime thriller The Burnt Orange Heresy. It was one of the last films to screen to the press that year, and the starry cast had made their way to the Lido for one of the final press conferences. Obviously, the focus of attention was Mick Jagger, who starred in the film and put on a bit of a show when he entered the press room. He was followed by the director and co-stars Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki and the gre...

After the box office acclaim of The Favourite and Poor Things, Yórgos Lánthimos reunites with his long-time writing partner Efthimis Filippou (Dogtooth, The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) for a strange anthology triptych that is darker and far more surreal than his recent output. Kinds of Kindness tells three distinct stories using the same acting troupe in different roles, and it’ll prove divisive for fans of The Favourite and last year’s Poor Things. This triple helping of Lanthimos’ return to his Greek Weird Wave roots feels like it’s for the OG fans who miss that queasy malaise fel...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Donald Sutherland, the enigmatic actor whose lengthy career encompassed films including "The Dirty Dozen" and "The Hunger Games," has died, his son said Thursday. He was 88. "With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away," actor Kiefer Sutherland wrote on X. The elder Sutherland had a distinctive look -- and piercing eyes -- that brought a depth and mystery to the huge range of roles he inhabited over more than half a century on the big screen. One of Canada's most famous sons, he played dashing leading men as well as antiheroes and villa...

Los Angeles (AFP) - With his towering height and a brooding expression that veered from menacing to hilarious and heartbroken, Donald Sutherland was Hollywood's chameleon, equally at home in war, love, horror -- or playing for laughs. In a dense filmography spanning six decades, Sutherland stood out for his unusual -- even odd -- looks and an incredible range of roles, working alongside several of the greatest directors of his time. The Canadian-born actor -- who has died at age 88, his son Kiefer said Thursday -- had many standout roles, from an army surgeon in wartime comedy "MAS*H" (1970) t...
