The fine involves a “significant number” of flights from December 2021 to August 2022 that passed over Iraq on their way between the United States and the United Arab Emirates. UAE-based Emirates was fined in 2020 for similar flights and agreed not to repeat the same violation. JetBlue and Emirates had an arrangement called code-sharing in which the New York-based carrier sold seats on Emirates flights as if they were its own planes. The United States lets foreign airlines operate flights sold under the name or code of a US airline if they obey Federal Aviation Administration restrictions when...

The plane diverted to Thailand. A 73-year-old British man died of a suspected heart attack and dozens were hospitalised including those with spinal, brain and bone or organ damages. EU travel rules are being introduced that will mean passengers from outside the bloc have to pass through a new automated system. Known as the Entry/Exit System or EES, it will replace the stamping of passports for non-EU travellers who don’t require a visa. These checks will use biometric data including fingerprints, facial scans and passport information, which will be taken the first time you enter an EU country after the system is introduced. After numerous setbacks, it is due to be introduced in autumn this year. But airlines have warned that the launch is likely to have a major impact on ...

Holidaymakers may face disruption to their summer getaway plans because of possible flight cancellations. This is mainly because of the safety incidents at Boeing earlier this year which have made it much more difficult for several airlines to procure enough aircraft for the Summer season. Some may be faced with no other choice than to cancel some flights or offer a reduced service on some routes. Back in January this year, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 MAX aircraft saw a mid-cabin exit door panel blow out in mid-air, just a few minutes after take-off. This incident sparked a flurry of inves...

Iceland’s Play Airlines is fairly new on the aviation scene, but it’s already making an impression on the industry. Founded in 2021, it has become well known for allowing its crew to express themselves with tattoos, piercings, and whatever hair colour they feel like having. Each staff member can wear gender neutral uniforms and trainers, as opposed to tight outfits and high heels. Einar Örn Ólafsson was only installed as the CEO of Play in April, but that approach is something he’s sticking to. “We like to think of ourselves as a fun, progressive and playful airline and we encourage our crew t...

Following days of chaos at Dubai International Airport, the head of Emirates Airline has published an open letter, offering his “most sincere apologies to every customer who has had their travel plans disrupted”.
