Ahead of the Chinese President's visit to Serbia and Hungary on the latest leg of his European visit, Xi Jinping was taken by France's President Emmanuel Macron to the Pyrenees mountains. Macron entertained Xi on Tuesday with lunch near the birthplace of his maternal grandmother at what was a more personal engagement following Monday's formal discussions in Paris. Those negotiations, also attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, focused heavily on trade disputes, in particular the matter of Chinese goods being imported into Europe. A collective representing freelance film festival workers in France has called for a strike during the Cannes Film Festival, which begins next Monday (14 May). The labour group, called Sous les écrans, la dèche (Broke behind the screens), said the strike wasn’t meant to shut down the festival, or damage any of the films that are premiering in Cannes, but rather to “disturb” proceedings. A labour strike is an exceedingly rare occurrence for Cannes. The world’s largest film festival has only been affected by social action once in its 76 years of operation. In 1968, the 21st edition of the festiv...

Five years ago, the unthinkable happened – France lost its title for longest baguette in the world. To Italy, no less. On Sunday, that tragedy was remedied, as bakers in Suresnes, a suburb northwest of Paris, reclaimed their birthright with a baguette worth writing home about. The baguette, measuring 140.53 metres, was registered in the Guinness World Records as the new record-holder for longest loaf. It was prepared in front of an audience at the Suresnes Baguette Show, an event organised by the National Confederation of French Boulangerie-Pâtisserie and Nutella. In Baguette We Trust: Award f...

France's far right is expected to make gains in June's European elections. It stands the chance of reshaping EU politics as it could influence the making of any new coalition in the European Parliament and weaken pro-EU forces. According to a late April exclusive Euronews Superpoll, the far-right Rassemblement National is in first place and has consolidated its score slightly above the 30% of the voting intentions in four weeks, while the party of president Macron, Renaissance, is second, with a meagre 17.5%. The French far-right is spearheaded by the Rassemblement National of Jordan Bardella,...

The OECD said there are signs that the global outlook has started to brighten, though growth remains modest. "The impact of tighter monetary conditions continues, especially in housing and credit markets, but global activity is proving relatively resilient, inflation is falling faster than initially projected and private sector confidence is improving, the report said. The OECD also highlighted that supply and demand imbalances in labour markets are easing, with unemployment remaining at or close to record lows. "Real incomes have begun to improve as inflation moderates and trade growth has tu...

The usual chants for higher salaries and equal pay echoed across the streets of Paris this Wednesday during the traditional May Day labour rights march. Ten of thousands of protestors took to the streets of the French capital against a backdrop of new demands such as peace in Gaza and against the upcoming Paris Olympic Games. But with less than six weeks left before the European elections on 9 June, the event turned into a highly political one. Many left-wing candidates didn't miss the opportunity to present their campaign, all vying for attention. Representing the Communist party for the EU e...
