The Huskers' corps of running backs just got a lot thinner. Injuries to sophomore starter Gabe Ervin Jr. (hip) and junior backup Rahmir Johnson (shoulder) have ended both players' seasons, head coach Matt Rhule said Monday. The injuries occurred during Nebraska's win Saturday against Northern Illinois. This means junior Anthony Grant is back at No. 1, just like he was last season, with redshirt freshman Emmett Johnson and true freshman Kwinton Ives backing him up. "Those will be the first three tailbacks into the game this week," Rhule said. Also out for the season is freshman defensive back D...

Nebraska started its first possession of the second quarter inside its own 10 yard line Saturday in Boulder. On the first play, Gabe Ervin Jr. broke loose for a 26-yard run, and the Huskers immediately had more manageable field position against Colorado. In this edition of Doc's Diagnosis, former Nebraska offensive lineman Dr. Rob Zatechka points out the well-executed blocking that helped make it happen. But it's always the little things, and a different split-second decision by one Husker could have turned it into something even bigger, Dr. Rob explains.

Is there a bell cow for Nebraska in the group? By Aug. 27 when the Huskers open the 2022 season, first-year Husker running backs coach Bryan Applewhite has the task of developing three or four backs out of a total of 13 who can be counted on to consistently move the chains for the Big Red this fall. Not since 2018 when Devine Ozigbo led the Huskers in rushing with 1,082 yards has there been a RB who has had a thousand rushing yards for Nebraska. In fact, a really solid RB corps hasn't existed since the days of Ameer Abdullah ('11-'14) and Rex Burkhead ('09-'12). In the two years they played to...

Tackling must improve against nation’s leading running back, defensive coordinator Erik Chinander says The Huskers need to improve in the tackling department this week against Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III, defensive coordinator Erik Chinander said after Tuesday's Nebraska football practice. Walker leads the nation in rushing yards and averages more than eight yards per carry. “He’s going to challenge your leverage. ... There haven’t been a lot of single tackles on this guy, so a lot of hats need to get to the football,” Chinander said. One more hat in the tackling mix in East...

Nebraska's starter at running back yet to be named Do the Huskers know who their No. 1 guy will be at running back? Not yet, offensive coordinator Matt Lubick said after Wednesday's practice. "We still haven't made a decision," he said. "We will play more than one guy, but we feel like we have lots of good players," he said, mentioning Sevion Morrison, Markese Stepp, Gabe Ervin Jr., Marvin Scott III and Rahmir Johnson. "You want to know who that guy is when it's third-and-one to win the football game,” Lubick said, adding: "We feel pretty good about it, but we’re not ready to say who that guy ...
