The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has placed a temporary stay on the removal of Texas’ floating barriers in the Rio Grande on the border with Mexico. The United States Court of Appeals did seem to agree with the lower court though, saying that the barriers are an “impairment to free and safe navigation.” Last week, a lower court judge, David Alan Ezra, directed Texas to remove the barriers. Ezra wrote that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) needed permission from the federal government to place the floating barriers. “Governor Abbott announced that he was not ‘asked for permission’ for...

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed a law that eliminates local rules mandating water breaks for construction workers. The legislation comes amid one of the worst heat waves in the state’s history. Supporters of House Bill 2127 said that it would block local ordinances across the state that hurt businesses. It will repeal the 2010 Austin and 2015 Dallas rulings that gave construction workers ten-minute breaks every four hours so that they could drink water and seek protection from the sun. The law also prevents other cities from enacting similar rules in the future. More workers die from high te...

The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for installing a floating barrier on the Rio Grande. This marks another effort by GOP officials to stop migrants from crossing into the U.S. from Mexico. The state stationed the buoys without notifying the International Boundary and Water Commission or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Justice Department’s filing asks a federal judge to force Texas to remove the 1,000-foot line of buoys and claims that its installation was unlawful. Texas is known for its aggressive border control tactics. The state has put up razor-wire...

Texas Republicans passed a voting bill that gives Secretary of State Jane Nelson the power under certain conditions to run elections in Harris County, a Democratic stronghold in an otherwise red state. A few days earlier, Texas Republicans also passed a voting bill to shift the oversight of Harris County elections from its appointed elections administrator to the county clerk and assessor. The county — known for cities like Houston and for being the most populous Texas county with 4.8 million residents — was the only part of the state targeted by the bills. Republicans argue that the law is ne...

In historically cold weather, multiple busloads of migrants were sent to Vice President Kamala Harris’ doorstep on Christmas eve. The busses dropped off dozens of families – including children – in the below-freezing weather. Three busloads containing around 140 people arrived in D.C. on Saturday, according to local affiliate ABC 7. They were sent at the behest of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R). The migrants were later brought to a local church by Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network, a local group, and received warm food and temporary shelter. “Tonight, on Christmas Eve, Gov Abbott’s buses dropp...

A woman seeking asylum committed suicide in a shelter in New York, according to a statement released by Mayor Eric Adams (D) on Monday. “Yesterday (Sunday), an asylum seeker in one of our facilities took her own life. With a large number of undocumented migrants arriving in New York City and Washington D.C. from Texas, there are growing calls from the mayors of both cities for the help of the National Guard and Federal government. Though Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) initially denied being responsible for initiating the transfers, he recently admitted to authorizing “Operation Lone Star” and claimed he began to bus the bussing operation to alleviate the situation in his state. With nowhere to stay, the migrants are adding to the already-large local homeless population. Many immigration lawyers based in the cit...

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott‘s (R) arrival at the Robb Elementary School shooting memorial in Uvalde, Texas, drew boos from the crowd on Sunday. Shouts of “We need change, governor!” and “Shame on you, Abbott!” from the crowd were captured on video. For the first time in two years, attendees are flooding to the hugely popular SXSW conference in Austin, Texas in person. There’s a lot of justified excitement around new films, music performances, tech reveals, and panels going on, but it’s hard to ignore that it’s happening soon after the concerning order by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) to investigate parents of transgender kids for child abuse was revealed. A lawsuit filed against the office of Abbott claims says these investigations have already begun, reportedly with an employee of the state protective services agency who has a teenage tran...
