The final estimate for Germany’s quarter-on-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) report for Q1 2024 came out on Friday morning. It revealed that GDP grew by 0.2%, according to the Federal Statistical Office. This was a surge from the previous quarter’s -0.5% and in line with analyst estimates. This increase was mainly due to a jump in gross fixed capital formation, which rose to 1.2% in the first quarter of the year, from -2.1% in Q4 2023, primarily driven by advances in construction investment. Year-on-year GDP came in at -0.2% in Q1 2024, which was the same as the previous quarter, as well a...

Retail sales in the UK were down sharply in April, with a fall of -2.3% and down further from March's -0.2% in March, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The figure, the largest drop in retail sales in the past four months was much worse than analyst expectations of -0.4%. The main reason for this was a drop in sales volumes across several sectors, especially non-food sales, which dropped 4.1%. The sectors include sports equipment, furniture, clothing, games and toys and more. Food costs remain highBad weather for most of April was seen as the main culprit, deterring several...

UK inflation has slowed to its lowest level since July 2021, but the decline in April fell short of economists' expectations, raising questions about the likelihood of an imminent interest rate cut by the Bank of England. The Consumer Prices Index rose by 2.3% in April 2024 compared to a year before, down from 3.2% in March. However, this missed the predicted drop to 2.1%, according to data released Wednesday by the Office for National Statistics. The reduction in the annual inflation rate in April 2024 was mainly due to price changes in the housing and household services sector, particularly ...

Coffee prices hardly increased in the EU in March, they inched up by 1% on average, hitting a 32-month-low inflation rate for this category. This compares to the hair-raising pace of growth last March when the commodity jumped by 13.5% in yearly comparison. The inflation rate for coffee has been declining since October 2022, when it was at its highest, reaching 17.4%. Although the increase in coffee prices slowed down in the EU overall, there are significant differences across countries. The highest inflation rates were registered in Croatia where coffee cost 7.4% more than last March. This ra...
