A rare first edition Harry Potter book had been sold at auction for more than £45,000 (approx. €53,000). The novel, "The Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", was auctioned off at the Lyon and Turnbull auction house in Edinburgh. The copy of J. K. Rowling’s book is one of the first 500 printed in 1997; publishers produced only a small number of copies because of the uncertainty towards its popularity. It was predicted to sell for between £40,000 and £60,000, because of some unique errors. The book eventually sold for £45,201 (€53,500), and features a spelling mistake of ‘Philosopher’s’ on...

Kazuko Shiraishi, a leading name in modern Japanese “beat” poetry, known for her dramatic readings, at times with jazz music, has died. She was 93. Shiraishi, whom American poet and translator Kenneth Rexroth dubbed “the Allen Ginsberg of Japan,” died of heart failure on June 14, Shichosha, a Tokyo publisher of her works, said today. With her trademark long black hair an...

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival has just announced that it will stick with its sponsorship deal with Baillie Gifford, after an internal review over the company’s links to Israel and fossil fuels. Baillie Gifford is a Scottish investment firm that entered the public eye in August last year when over 50 authors threatened to boycott the Edinburgh Book Festival over its investments in corporations that profit from fossil fuels. It’s creepy. It’s very creepy. Former president Donald Trump has shared his views on global popstar Taylor Swift, describing her as “unusually beautiful”. He was asked about Swift, the "biggest celebrity of our times" who is currently on the European leg of her Eras Tour, for the forthcoming book “Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through The Looking Glass”, by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh. Rather than commenting on Swift's achievements as an artist, Trump focused, rather predictably, her looks instead. “I think she’s beautiful - very beautif...

With a tender kiss, George Orwell’s son made a quiet gesture to his father: in a way, the writer had finally come home. When Orwell fought on the Republican side in the Spanish civil war, his division was poised to take the eastern city of Huesca. Confident of victory over the Nationalists, the generals promised the troops they would be drinking coffee in the city the next day, but it never came to pass. Now, almost 90 years after the writer of Homage to Catalonia nearly lost his life in the 1936-1939 war, his son Richard Blair has finally realised his father’s wish to make it to Huesca – symb...
