Almost 90 migrants in an overcrowded boat adrift in the Mediterranean Sea have been saved by a humanitarian group. A rescue ship from the Italian NGO 'Emergency' rescued 87 people stranded in the sea on Friday evening. They had departed from Zawiya, Libya 20 hours earlier. They were without food and water and their boat was adrift and overcrowded. When the rescue crew arrived, they found the boat taking on water and with its tubes deflated. Among the group was a pregnant woman and fourteen unaccompanied minors. "We immediately took in the most vulnerable cases: a pregnant woman in her fourth m...

Officers converged on the camp just before dawn and urged the migrants to pack their tents and belongings, before directing them to a bus to be driven to a transit centre outside the city. Only two or three of them climbed aboard the bus. Most others walked away carrying their belongings. Police said the operation was carried out for security reasons, notably because the tent camp was near schools. The 100 or so men and boys from West Africa had been living in the makeshift camp in central Paris for several weeks. Paris-region officials told the migrants - many of them minors and in the proces...

Rwanda says it's ready to receive migrants from the United Kingdom after the British parliament this week approved a long-stalled controversial bill deporting people who arrived in the UK via small boats to the East African country. Hope Hostel in the vibrant upscale neighbourhood of Kagugu, an area of the Rwandan capital of Kigali that is home to many expats and several international schools, is prepared to receive the migrants. The hostel was once home to students whose parents were victims of the 1994 genocide, the most horrific period in this African nation's history. During this time, ext...

Britain’s Home Secretary James Cleverly has said the government is doing all it can to stop dangerous small boat crossings, after news that five migrants had died in an attempt to cross the English Channel. Cleverly is in Rome to discuss ways to accelerate joint work to stem illegal migration from North Africa. His visit comes a day after the UK parliament passed the controversial Safety of Rwanda Bill, which will see some illegal migrants in the UK sent to the central African country. “This vital legislation means we can now proceed with our Rwanda plan and begin removing people with no right...

The Council of Europe's top human rights official has expressed "serious concerns" over the UK government's Rwanda deportation scheme, saying it raises "major issues about the human rights of asylum seekers and the rule of law more generally.” Human Rights Commissioner Michael O'Flaherty pointed out that Rishi Sunak's government is planning to remove people to Rwanda without prior assessment of their asylum claims. "The Bill prevents individuals faced with removal to Rwanda from accessing remedies for potential violations of the absolute prohibition of refoulement," wrote O'Flaherty, "while it...

At least 500 migrants and rough sleepers have been put on chartered buses and moved from the French capital. Some NGOs claim the government spearheaded the campaign to make the French capital "more presentable" for the upcoming Olympic Games. The government says the recent relocations were prompted by emergency accommodation centres reaching saturation. But regional mayors are expressing their outrage at the new arrivals, with the Mayor of Orléans Serge Grouard stating the timing of the relocations, which lead into the July sporting event, is "disturbing". We know what it’s like to have to leave your home against your will and at short notice. To travel to a new country and try to rebuild your life. And we know that the UK Government’s cruel "cash for humans" deal with Rwanda won’t stop people from taking dangerous journeys to seek safety in the UK. We’re part of a group of people with lived experience of the UK immigration and asylum system — some of us are torture survivors, some of us refugees, and some of us are stuck in the backlog still trying to find safety. But we all had a life, family, role, and respect in our homelands, and we can tel...
