Washington (AFP) - Donald Trump said he wants to grant green cards to foreign graduates from US colleges, in an apparent softening of his typically hard-line view on immigration, a key election issue. The Republican candidate made the remarks in a podcast published Thursday, days after President Joe Biden announced a citizenship pathway for immigrants married to US nationals, counterbalancing his recent crackdown on illegal border crossings. "What I want to do and what I will do is, you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically as part of your diploma a green card to be abl...

Riham is heavily pregnant and just days away from giving birth, but she has no idea who will cover her hospital expenses. She fled Gaza when she was six months pregnant and has repeatedly asked the Palestinian embassy in Egypt for help, so far in vain. "All I got was promises that everything will be fine." Riham is one of more than 100,000 Palestinians who fled to Egypt to escape the fighting in Gaza. "Now, I should give birth in a week and nothing happened." Most are in Cairo, stuck in limbo, unable to return to Gaza but also unable to start a new life, either. She and her compatriots lack th...

Washington (AFP) - President Joe Biden attempted a political high-wire act Tuesday by announcing a citizenship pathway for half a million immigrants married to US nationals, in a counterweight to his recent crackdown on illegal border crossers. The Biden administration has been struggling to address immigration, a hugely divisive issue for many Americans ahead of November's presidential election. "We can both secure the border and provide legal pathways to citizenship, but we have to acknowledge the patience of goodwill the American people is being tested by their fears at the border," Biden s...

A UK Border Force boat has rescued at least 85 migrants off the coast of Kent. The migrants, including young children, were attempting to cross the Channel on dinghies. It is the latest in a string of Border Force rescues as recent UK government figures show more than 10,000 migrants have arrived in the UK by small boats this year. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has long promised to "stop the boats" arriving across the channel, many of them carrying people seeking asylum. Among the initiatives meant to change the situation is outreach to the government of Albania, whose help is needed to crack dow...

Roughly a dozen suspected migrants have died during a failed travel attempt in Mediterranean waters on Monday, German aid group Resqship said. The group wrote on X, formerly Twitter, Resqship crew were "caring" for 51 people evacuated off the boat. "The rescue came too late for 10 people,” according to the post. "Two of whom were unconscious - they had to be cut free with an axe," the group says online. The southern Italian island – close to North Africa – is a well known target destination for people-smuggling, with 127,000 migrants making landfall last year. Meanwhile, the Italian coast guar...

Hungary has been ordered by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to pay a fine of €200 million ($216 million) and a further €1 million per day for not implementing a previous ruling to change its asylum policies. The decision by the judges in Luxembourg is the latest in a series of reprimands for Hungary, where the right-wing nationalist government has often been criticized by the European Commission for its rigid refugee policy. In previous judgements, the ECJ has declared significant parts of the Hungarian asylum system to be unlawful. Thursday's ruling followed a court judgement in December ...
