China, Iran and Russia have begun a joint naval drill in the Gulf of Oman, a crucial waterway near the mouth of the Persian Gulf, officials said Tuesday. US, Thai, and South Korean marine forces stormed ashore on a Thai beach on Friday as part of the three countries' annual Cobra Gold military exercise. The scenario was an operation to seize and hold a beachhead against an opposing force. Sweden will send combat troops to Latvia, as the country gears up for possible NATO membership. The Swedish soldiers will form part of the first line of defence against a potential Russian invasion of the Baltics.
