Mrs. Doubtfirecame out 31 years old; long enough ago to be considered a full-fledged family comedy classic. And also long enough for the actors who played the central kids in the film to be all grown up and really make us take stock of our own mortality seeing them reunited in 2024. Those actors are, of course Mara Wilson, Matthew Lawrence, and Lisa Jakub, who played the Hillard kids in the film. After their parents Daniel (Robin Williams) and Miranda (Sally Field) separate, the kids get a new nanny: Mrs. Doubtfire — who is secretly Daniel in elaborate prosthetic makeup. At the time Mrs. Doubt...

The new Mad Max prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga originated in materials that George Miller and his collaborators created in pre-production on Mad Max: Fury Road. To fully understand who their characters were, they wrote biographies of their lives prior to the events of the movie, including one for the ferocious Furiosa, played in Fury Road by Charlize Theron. After the success of Fury Road, Miller decided to turn that backstory into its own movie, which is how we got a Furiosa prequel starring Anya Taylor-Joy. But that wasn’t the only backstory Miller wrote; he also filled in what happened to ...

What is the “perfect” length of a movie? According to a new poll of 2,000 Americans conducted by Talker Research, “the ideal average length” of a movie is just 92 minutes — just an hour and a half. It is not clear to me whether that number includes closing credits or not. Their report finds that “the average person wants to spend far less time at the movie theater going forward.” Only two percent of the people they spoke to — according to my rudimentary math, that means roughly 40 folks — want movies to be longer than two and a half hours. (Whoever you are out there, you 40 individuals, I love...

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier would have been a great title for the final Star Trekmovie. As it turned out, the film was so disliked it almost was the final Star Trek movie, and perhaps would have been the franchise’s farewell if not for two key factors. For one, while The Final Frontier was the lowest-grossing Star Trek film to that point, it was still profitable, grossing roughly $70 million worldwide against a budget of some $30 million. For another, 1991 marked the 25th anniversary of the first Star Trek television series, and Paramount wanted a new film in theaters to commemorate the oc...

Congratulations: You survived another winter to see the sun shine again. It is now May. You made it. And that means it is now summer movie season once again — not just in theaters but on Netflix, who also observe the time-honored film industry tradition that when the weather gets warmer, the movies get inexplicably larger. No one knows why this happens. It just does. For the summer of 2024, for example, Netflix will have a new comedy from Jerry Seinfeld about the history of Pop-Tarts, a new comedy from Richard Linklater and Glen Powell about a would-be hit man, and the long-awaited fourth Beve...

Chris Hemsworth is one of the longest-tenured members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point. The only original Avengers left standing besides him in 2024 are Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk (who hasn’t been around as long as Hemsworth’s Thor), and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. While the first couple Thors weren’t exactly massive hits, they did respectable business. And then with the Avengers movies and especially Thor: Ragnarok, Hemsworth really came into his own as a comic leading man. (No pun intended.) Those films brought him a ton of praise and attention, and really ...

He’s the best there is at what he does … and what he does is make bizarre carbonated beverages. There I was at my local multiplex last night, minding my own business on my way toa screening of The Fall Guy, when I glanced at their wall of Coca-Cola Freestyle machines. There, glowing for all the world to see, was an ad for not one but two “limited edition mixes” inspired by the upcoming Marvel film Deadpool & Wolverine. They were “Deadpool Chimichanga Chaser Coca-Cola” and “Wolverine Adamantium Orange Coca-Cola.” Now most film critics would see sodas based on a movie and decide they don’t need ...

The Fall Guyis a romantic comedy with two love stories, one happening onscreen between an ambitious director and a daring stuntman, and another happening behind the camera between the ambitious director of The Fall Guy and his crew of daring stuntmen. They’re both quite satisfying. Onscreen, Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling have warm, playful chemistry as the director and the stuntman who can’t stop flirting even as the former repeatedly slams the latter into a rock wall over and over. We like watching these two characters work together and we love when they fight in that playful way that in the m...

Stunts have been an integral part of filmmaking since the very beginning, providing the type of blood-pumping adrenaline rush that comes with seeing something unbelievable pulled off to perfection. There’s nothing we love more than staring openmouthed at a particularly incredible stunt, wondering how in the world they possibly did that without anyone getting seriously injured. With the prevalence of computer effects making it easier for filmmakers to throw some stunts into their movies without anyone actually having to do the stunts at all, the genuine article is even more precious. Stunts hav...

Is superhero fatigue a real thing? Is the Marvel Cinematic Universe in trouble? That depends on who you ask. But according to one of the Russo brothers — directors of most of the most successful Marvel films including Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, the company’s recent box-office woes have nothing to do with an oversaturated marketplace or audience fatigue. Instead, Joe Russo told GamesRadar the issue lies in something even more fundamental to movies as a whole: “A big generational divide about how you consume media.” As Joe Russo put it… There’s a generatio...
