Scientists have discovered what could be the first known smooth hammerhead shark nursery in the Galápagos. The vulnerable shark species - so-called for its elongated head which forms a straighter curve than the scalloped hammerhead - is rarely spotted in the marine reserve. But after observing several young pups in a small bay at Isabela Island, the Greenpeace expedition team believe they have found a breeding ground in the archipelago - and they’re rightly excited. “This is an amazing discovery!” says lead scientist Alex Hearn from Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador and marine cons...

Most of us today are familiar with rewilding - the concept of bringing nature back in certain areas, restoring lost ecosystems and biodiversity to a healthier state. It’s conservation work that’s often attached to the idea of “letting nature take care of itself”, with minimal human interference. But is less human intervention always better? Or the most realistic approach on a 21st-century planet, home to 8.1 billion people? Not necessarily. In some cases, a human touch can not only be helpful in designing rewilded ecosystems but also remain a vital part of them. Perhaps because we’re so used t...

It’s Earth Day today, and legendary English musician Brian Eno has given David Bowie’s 1995 deep cut 'Get Real' a twist by using environmental sounds. Eno has remixed the track to incorporate the cries of hyenas, rooks, and wild pigs. The Piggy Who Sold The World, anyone? “In the nature remix of ‘Get Real’, a track I co-wrote with David Bowie 30 years ago, the animals are invading the song – it’s like it has sprung leaks everywhere and these animals are coming in through every window and crack between the doors. They’re sort of threatening – suddenly Nature has crept into the art.” It has been...

A draft law designed to help restore Europe’s degraded soils to health has survived a vote in the European Parliament, but only after it was stripped of legally binding targets and monitoring requirements were significantly watered down or removed entirely. The fate of the Soil Monitoring Law was by no means assured, with several key pieces of European Green Deal legislation having already been either shelved or delayed indefinitely in the run up to EU elections and amid angry protests by farmers. But in a plenary vote on Wednesday (10 April) evening, a proposal by the conservative and nationa...

Several major European banks could potentially be contributing to ecosystem destruction and extinction, according to a study published by Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands), Greenpeace International and Harvest. The study, named "EU bankrolling ecosystem destruction", uses data from Profundo, an independent research organisation. The report is co-signed by several other non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including Oro Verde, Rainforest Action Network and the Association of Ethical Shareholders. It highlights how European banks have lent some €256 billion to entities putting ...

St Helena, a small, craggy island in the South Atlantic Ocean, has never seen many tourists. It’s for a good reason though - it's one of the most remote inhabited places in the world. Up until 2017, it took five nights by boat to reach the British overseas territory, located halfway between southern Africa and Brazil. That’s changed recently, with weekly commercial flights and the recent arrival of high-speed internet. Local authorities are now hoping to breathe new life into a fledgling tourism industry. In 2023, the island welcomed about 2,100 leisure travellers - and the aim is to attract e...

In a world full of division, anger and heartbreak, it’s cathartic to have something uncontroversial that we can all sit back and admire. This majestic tree, with an unusually thick trunk, is located in the heart of the botanical garden of the University of Wroclaw, in the Niemcza region of Poland. It took home 39,158 votes and is the third Polish tree in a row to wi...

British artist Banksy has confirmed that he is behind a new mural that has appeared on a building in London. The artwork covers the wall of a four-storey building and shows a small figure holding a pressure hose beside a large cherry tree. Green paint has been sprayed across the wall, replicating the absent leaves of the tree, which has been severely cropped, known as pollarding. It was first spotted in the Finsbury Park neighbourhood, in north-east London, yesterday. Banksy claimed the work by posting before and after photos of the location on his official Instagram account. But what's the me...

The European Parliament’s environment committee has backed a proposal for mandatory monitoring and remedial measures with a view to restoring an estimated two-thirds of soils that are in poor health, jeopardising biodiversity and future food production. By 42 votes to 26, with 14 abstentions, MEPs on Monday (11 March) adopted their draft position on a Soil Monitoring Law proposed by the European Commission last July, intended to further the aim of restoring to health by 2050 swathes of land that have been degraded by pollution, unsustainable intensive farming or urban sprawl. Environmental cam...
