As a dual-nationality family with a second home in Jura, France, we’ve seen our share of LeShuttle delays. The infamous day in 2019 when extreme heat caused a meltdown, and class war almost broke out in the car park. The queues backed up onto the M20 at half terms. The time we had to jump ship, and go on the ferry. So it was with some horror that I learned of the EES - the European Entry/Exit System - which will be introduced in October this year. Brexit has already increased travel times due to the need to get passports stamped. The EES will replace that system, and require Brits to have data...

Bulgaria and Romania joined Europe's Schengen area of free movement on Sunday, joining the rest of Europe travelling freely by air and sea without border checks. The admission to the zone comes after a thirteen-year wait. The membership is partial, however, as a veto by Austria means the new membership will not apply to land routes, which Vienna argued would lead to more asylum seekers travelling into Europe. The Schengen zone will now comprise of 29 members – 25 of the 27 European Union member states as well as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Romania's government said Schengen...

Digital nomadism has shot up in popularity recently. While many destinations have simple citizenship requirements in place, the country a person hails from can still significantly impact their travel opportunities. That has a knock-on effect on passports too - and, now, you can find out exactly how nomad-friendly your own travel documents are. Alexandria (United States) (AFP) - It's just a small box to tick on an application form, but a huge breakthrough for D. Ojeda, a non-binary person who on Monday became one of the first Americans to apply for a gender-neutral passport. "Even with my family, they still don't get it," said Ojeda, a 34-year-old activist who goes by D. and uses the pronouns "they, them." "So at least I have the government to say who I am as a person." The option to receive a passport with an "X" gender designation, which was made available Monday by US President Joe Biden's administration, was hailed as a blessing ...

New York (AFP) - As the United States' vaccination campaign accelerates, so-called vaccine passports are gaining traction despite political divisions and a fragmented health care system that complicates the centralization of data. Asher Weintraub, 17, was happy to show off the new digital New York state "pass" that he downloaded to his smartphone, which, via a QR code, certified that he was vaccinated against Covid. "I think it is a good thing, you don't have to like provide all (sorts of) forms and documents each time," he said, displaying his code at the entrance to one of the first indoor c...

Miami (AFP) - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Friday banned the use of "vaccine passports" in the southeastern US state, citing "individual freedom." The Republican governor's executive order prohibits government offices from issuing any "standardized documentation" certifying that an individual has been immunized against Covid-19. It also prohibits private companies in Florida from requiring any type of document from their customers certifying their vaccination, or immunity after they have recovered from the coronavirus. The order by DeSantis, an ardent supporter of former president Donald...
