Almost two thirds of UK adults are unaware of the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) which is scheduled to launch later this year. That staggering statistic comes from findings by Co-op Insurance. The research has also found that more than one in five UK adults admit they would be ‘put off’ travelling to Europe as a result of the new system. EES will require fingerprints and facial scans to be taken from UK travellers heading to EU countries. It’s set to begin in October, just six months away, and 66 per cent of people have no idea about its implementation, while 22 per cent will likely refuse t...

The European Parliament is developing plans to reform visa application procedures in the Schengen area by moving from a system where travellers are required to apply in person to get physical visa stickers to a digital system instead. The idea is that no longer will travellers apply for individual visas; instead, they’ll apply for an EU visa through one EU visa platform, which will allow them to download an e-visa directly to their smartphone. All applicants will be required to do is to upload electronic copies of their travel documents along with other supporting materials, followed by the pa...

After years of negotiations to join the Schengen area, Romania and Bulgaria now have free access for travellers arriving by air or sea from both countries. However, land border checks will remain in place due to opposition primarily from Austria which has long blocked their bid over illegal migration concerns. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the change as a “huge success for both countries” and a “historic moment” for what is the world’s largest free travel zone. The Schengen Area was established in 1985. Before Bulgaria and Romania’s admission, it was comprised of 23 of th...

April is set to be an exciting month for Romania and Bulgaria. On 31 March, the Balkan nations started the process of joining the Schengen Area as controls were lifted at air and sea borders. Discussions about lifting controls at land borders - which would see the two countries properly join the Schengen Area - are still ongoing. While both nations have been members of the European Union since 2007, they are still obliged to show passports upon entry to other EU countries, unlike many other European citizens. In 2024, border controls for the two countries will be simplified and it’s likely man...

Bulgaria and Romania joined Europe's Schengen area of free movement on Sunday, joining the rest of Europe travelling freely by air and sea without border checks. The admission to the zone comes after a thirteen-year wait. The membership is partial, however, as a veto by Austria means the new membership will not apply to land routes, which Vienna argued would lead to more asylum seekers travelling into Europe. The Schengen zone will now comprise of 29 members – 25 of the 27 European Union member states as well as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Romania's government said Schengen...

Poland has joined the so-called 'military Schengen' agreement, a European initiative aimed at streamlining troop mobility among participating states. The agreement, also signed by Germany and the Netherlands, is both a gesture of solidarity with Ukraine and a concrete step towards better European security, guaranteeing a swift aid corridor for Ukraine and facilitating future mobilisation on NATO's eastern flank. According to the Polish minister of defence, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, the conflict in Ukraine has underscored the importance of rapid troop mobilisation. Daphne Bergsma, the Dutch am...

The European Commission has submitted a proposal to increase the basic fee for a Schengen visa in 2024. If it gets the green light, the cost will rise by 12 per cent from €80 to €90 for adults and from €40 to €45 for children. The EU is also planning to raise the fee even more for countries showing “insufficient cooperation on readmission,” which refers to accepting the re-entry of individuals expelled from member states. Schengen visas are required for citizens from non-EU countries that do not benefit from the EU and Schengen area's 90-day visa-free rule. These include nationals of South Afr...
