Geneva (AFP) - Rather than fixating on the impact of the world's soaring population, the world should look at women's reproductive rights to shore up "demographic resilience," the UN said Wednesday. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) -- the UN's sexual and reproductive health agency -- acknowledged there was widespread anxiety over the size of the world's population, which is expected to peak at around 10.4 billion during the 2080s. But the UNFPA said the focus should be on giving women more power to control when and how they have children. "The question is: 'Can everyone exercise thei...

United Nations (United States) (AFP) - A baby born somewhere on Tuesday will be the world's eight billionth person, according to a projection by the United Nations. "The milestone is an occasion to celebrate diversity and advancements while considering humanity's shared responsibility for the planet," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement. The UN attributes the growth to human development, with people living longer thanks to improvements in public health, nutrition, personal hygiene and medicine. Los Angeles (AFP) - Family was the top priority for Brenda Jasso when she immigrated from Mexico to the United States at the age of 25, with the first of her three children already in tow. Her eldest child is now the same age but says a family can wait. For her, it's all about a career. "If my workload is more than 50 hours a week, what time am I going to give to a baby?" asks her daughter, Citlali de La Rosa. As the Earth's population teeters on eight billion, more people are choosing -- or being forced -- to migrate in search of resources or opportunities for themselves and their families. I...

Washington (AFP) - US life expectancy dropped by 1.8 years in 2020, final official figures showed Wednesday, the steepest drop in more than 75 years driven in large part by the Covid-19 pandemic. Life expectancy at birth was 77.0 years for the total US population last year, down from 78.8 years in 2019, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among men it was 74.2 years, while for women the figure was 79.9 years. Overall, Covid was the third-leading cause of death, accounting for 350,000 fatalities, just over a tenth of all registered deaths, said a CDC report, which...

Washington (AFP) - US population growth fell over the past decade to the second-slowest pace in history, the Census Bureau reported Monday, after Donald Trump's tough crackdown brought immigration to a near halt. The official 10-year count estimated that 331,449,281 million people lived in the world's third-most populous country on April 1, 2020. That was a 7.4 percent rise from 2010, when the official population stood at 308,745,538, the Census Bureau said. The 10-year expansion was significantly slower than the previous decade, when the population grew by 9.7 percent, and was barely above th...
