People in Europe are more worried about natural disasters than armed conflicts according to a new study. The study by Debating Europe, the citizen engagement unit of think tank Friends of Europe, comes just a month before the bloc heads to the polls for the European Elections. More than 2,000 people across seven EU countries - Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Spain and Sweden - were asked what they thought were the most pressing issues currently facing Europe. Topics included climate change, democracy, inclusive and sustainable growth, and safety and defence. Climate change was a consi...

Glasgow could soon become the latest European city to offer free public transport to its citizens. The Scottish city is set to trial a pilot scheme which could see 1,000 people given cost-free access to all forms of public transport for nine weeks. Glasgow’s council put forward the idea and has won some support for the pilot which, if successful, would determine if there should be a wider rollout to every resident. The scheme has yet to secure full funding though, meaning there’s no guarantee it will go ahead - although lawmakers are still hopeful that it will come to fruition. How would free ...

Luxembourg is famous as the only country in the world to offer free public transport - and now it’s set to expand its reach. Since 2020, all buses, trains and trams have been free of charge throughout the micronation and a new pilot scheme will offer commuters who live in French municipalities bordering Luxembourg the same benefits. The service, which will operate during peak hours in the morning and evening, will extend to thousands of commuters who live in France and work in the Grand Duchy. Currently, commuters can only take advantage of Luxembourg’s free transport when they reach the borde...

More people now travel by bike than by car in the centre of Paris, according to a new report. The study by urban planning agency Institut Paris Region (IPR) found that Parisians use bicycles for 11.2 per cent of their trips inside the city centre whereas people use cars for just 4.3 per cent of journeys. It is a market increase from 2010 when IPR found that cycling accounted for just 3 per cent of trips in Paris. Walking was the most popular form of transport in the city centre, wracking up 53.3 per cent of all journeys. This was followed by public transport at 30 per cent. France set to launc...

Following on from the success of Germany’s Deutschlandticket, France is set to launch its own version this summer. In an interview with AFP on Wednesday French transport minister Patrice Vergriete said an agreement had been found with all regions. The scheme is expected to cost €49 per month and it will be available to around 700,000 young people under the age of 27 this July and August. It will allow unlimited travel on TER and Intercity trains but will exclude high-speed TGV trains. Back in September, President Emmanuel Macron promised the introduction of a national rail pass during an inter...

“Night trains are the future,” says Georges Gilkinet, Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Mobility. It’s something he hopes to persuade his EU colleagues of as Belgium presides over the Council of the European Union this year. During the next EU informal meeting of transport ministers in Brussels in early April, Gilkinet will put night trains firmly on the agenda. Together with Austria, Belgium has led the development of night trains in recent years. Both countries now want other EU member states to focus on connecting Europe’s major cities by sleeper train. Here’s why Gilkinet is...

Germany’s rail strikes will finally come to an end as train drivers’ union GDL has struck a pay deal with Deutsche Bahn. Train travellers have already been hit hard by industrial action this year, from a week-long walkout in January to a series of warning strikes in March. Alongside demanding a pay increase, train drivers have been calling for a reduction in working hours from 38 to 35 per week, without a pay cut. GDL rejected various offers from state-owned DB in a series of negotiations over the past five months. Following Monday’s successful negotiations, DB’s HR director Martin Seiler said...

As more people reconsider how they travel on a warming planet, a small but growing contingent in Europe wants to switch from high-emission, short-haul planes to more climate-friendly sleeper trains. But for all the climate benefits - plus the enduring romance of overnight train journeys - it's not always simple building a vacation around them. Several national railways and private operators have moved in to meet the rising demand, and the result is a patchwork of overnight routes sold on over 30 different websites. Many routes may not run every day, and online ticket aggregators don’t include ...

Passengers experienced considerable disruption on Thursday, when buses, trams and metro trains ceased operating across much of Germany as local transport workers began a two-day-strike. One of Europe’s largest trade unions, Verdi, which represents 90,000 transport workers in Germany, called for the 48-hour 'warning strike' in the ongoing nationwide wage dispute in regional negotiations. Workers are demanding better working conditions, including shorter working weeks and extra compensation days for shift and night work. Public transport workers have staged several strikes in recent weeks amid t...

Public transport workers and climate activists are two groups that have often been pitted against each other. But next week will see the two coming together in Germany for a nationwide strike. It marks the beginning of a partnership between the youth-led global climate movement Fridays for Future and Ver.di, one of the largest trade unions in Europe who represent 1.9 million service workers. The campaign #WirFahrenZusammen (#WeDriveTogether) is fighting for better working conditions for transport workers and much-needed investment and reform to the public transport system. Transforming the tra...
