Semiconductor giant STMicroelectronics has recently revealed that it will be getting a €2 billion grant from the Italian government to built a chip factory in Sicily. ASML, based in the Dutch city of Eindhoven, has signed an agreement with Eindhoven Tech University (TU/e) to spend a combined €180 million on semiconductor research over the coming decade. The tech giant, which makes machines to produce computer chips, will conduct more joint investigations with TU/e, with plans for more PhD students to be trained in the field. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) beat market expectations on Thursday as it announced a net income of 225.49 billion New Taiwan dollars (€6.52 billion). The result, representing the firm’s first quarterly profit rise in a year, is up from a forecast of NT$213.59 billion (€6.18 billion). Taiwan saw its worst earthquake in 25 years on Wednesday morning, about 18 kilometres south of Hualien. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration estimated the quake to be at a magnitude of 7.2 although the US Geological Survey put it at a 7.4 magnitude.
