A growing number of imported electric cars, many of them from China, are stuck at the ports of Europe as manufacturers and distributors struggle with a slowdown in sales. The ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge in Belgium are reportedly flooded with EVs from China, however, the port told Euronews that it is not only Chinese vehicles which are involved. But they did not disclose any other exporter countries contributing to the problem. However, Le Monde reported that at Calloo, near Antwerp, and Zeebrugge, the huge parking lots to accommodate 130,000 freshly shipped vehicles, are cramped now with Ch...

Ship pollution doesn’t tend to hold much attention unless something has gone seriously wrong. When the Marco Polo ferry ran aground off the coast of Sweden in October, the world watched its slow and leaky journey back to port, shedding tonnes of oil that reached more than 500 birds in Blekinge county. But incidents like these are the tip of the iceberg for the Baltic Sea, Europe’s almost entirely closed arm of the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by nine countries. One of the more insidious sources of pollution into this unique body of water comes from a part of ships that is meant to reduce their i...

The seizure by Iranian forces of a Portuguese-flagged container ship as it left the Persian Gulf has prompted global shipping companies to demand the United Nations provide increased military protection, with shippers already having been forced to take lengthy detours to maintain European trade flows amid the intensifying conflict in the wider region. Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the Strait of Hormuz seized the MSC Aries on Saturday morning (13 April), increasing unease within a shipping industry that has found itself in the crossfire of tit-for-tat hostilities in the Middle East, and promp...

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, US, due to a container ship collision, has led to increased worries about worldwide supply chain disruptions. The ship, called the Dali, is estimated to have experienced a power issue shortly before the accident, which took place on Tuesday morning. The Francis Scott Key Bridge lies across the entrance to the Port of Baltimore, which is a crucial port for automobile exports in the US. The port saw more than 47 million tonnes of foreign cargo in 2023. Marco Forgione, director general at The Institute of Export and International Trade, a...

Environment ministers have broadly contested the inclusion of maritime transport in EU rules to counter microplastic pollution, arguing during an Environment Council meeting that unilateral European action would have limited impact and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) should take the lead. Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland and Slovenia are among the member states which on Monday (March 25) have been vocal against the inclusion of maritime transport in the European Commission proposal to reduce microplastic pollution from industrial pellet loss...

The transport of freight along Germany's large inland waterways network continued its long-term decline last year, when 172 million tons were shipped, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported on Monday. The figure in 2022 was 10 million tons higher, largely as a result of increased shipping of coal used for generating electricity. Freight transport on the inland waterways has fallen by 25.9% since 1990, the year of German reunification, even though total economic output has risen. Compared with 2019, the year before the coronavirus pandemic, the decline up to last year was 16.3%. In ...

Transport alone is set to make up almost half of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2030, a new analysis from campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E) has found. Emissions from transport across the continent have increased by more than a quarter since 1990 despite overall emissions being in decline. Since its peak in 2007, transport has been decarbonising more than three times slower than the rest of the economy, T&E found. “The good news is transport emissions in Europe have peaked. The bad news is other sectors are decarbonising three times faster,” says William Todts, executive direct...

Washington (AFP) - Operatives from Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah are working inside Yemen to support Huthi insurgents' attacks on international shipping, a US official said Tuesday. Tim Lenderking, the US special envoy for Yemen, told a Senate subcommittee that Iran's clerical state was "equipping and facilitating" the Huthi attacks, which have triggered retaliatory US and British strikes on Yemen. "Credible public reports suggest a significant number of Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah operatives are supporting Huthi attacks from inside Yemen," Lenderking said. "I can't imagine the Yemen...
