A company drilling for natural gas off the coast of northern Israel unexpectedly discovered a 3,300-year-old ship and its cargo, one of the oldest known examples of a ship sailing far from land. The ship, dating back to the late Bronze Age, was found far from shore, indicating that the navigation abilities of ancient seafarers were far more advanced than previously thought because they could travel without a line of sight to land, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) have said. Shortly after the trial opened in the southern city of Kalamata, Tsironi recommended that the charges be dismissed, saying that Greek jurisdiction could not be established because the overcrowded trawler sank outside Greek territorial waters. Nine men were due to go on trial, accused of causing the worst migrant shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea for ten years. Human rights groups had a...

Sydney (AFP) - The wreck of Captain James Cook's famed vessel the Endeavour has been found off the coast of the US state of Rhode Island, Australian researchers said Thursday. Their research partners in the United States, however, have described the announcement as premature. For more than two centuries, it lay forgotten. "Since 1999, we have been investigating several 18th-century shipwrecks in a two...
