In the last few years, I've been handing out midseason grades of the Nebraska coaching staff. (Here's 2021 and 2022). It's an interesting exercise to evaluate how the assistants, coordinators, and head coach are doing in four key areas. These grades are intended to be a reflection on what I've seen through the first half of the season, as well as providing a reference post for future review. MethodologyWhen I grade coaches, I look at four key areas: On-field performance. How is their unit playing? Are they a bright spot, weakness, or somewhere in between?Improvement. There's no point in belaboring the fact that Nebraska's defense was one of the worst last season. First year D-line coach Terrance Knighton is going to earn every bit of his paycheck this fall when he tries to coach up a group of mostly inexperienced players. They'll need to be fast learners if they hope to learn all the nuances of a brand new 3-3-5 defense. They also must learn how to stop offenses like that of Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. Defense was the focus of talk from coaches and players after Tuesday morning's Nebraska football practice, the second of preseason camp. Defensive coordinator Tony White White said “everything is daily” with respect to competition and reps at various positions. “Daily competition, daily rotation,” White said. “We’ve got some guys moving from red to black and black to red with the ‘A’ team and with the ‘B’ team. We’re constantly moving guys around. We want to reward guys who do it the right way and do it well, and we want to make sure that we send a message to guys that if you're not going to d...

There's still a lot we don't know about Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White's 3-3-5 defense, in particular, how he'll tweak it to adapt to the Big Ten. Speed and versatility will be some of the hallmarks moving forward, but what the front 6/7 looks like in a predominantly running league has some fans curious. The Huskers lost Colton Feist, Devin Drew and Stephon Wynn from last year's D-line rotation. When Matt Rhule was hired as head coach late last year, he was faced with a position group that had been largely neglected on the recruiting trail, with the previous staff signing only 11 pl...
