The felling of the Sycamore Gap tree along Hadrian’s Wall in northern England last year caused an outpouring of grief and outrage in the UK and beyond. Now two men have been charged with cutting down the beloved 150-year-old tree, prosecutors said on Tuesday (30 April). Daniel Graham, 38, and Adam Carruthers, 31, were charged with causing criminal damage and damaging the wall built in A.D. 122 by Emperor Hadrian to guard the northwest frontier of the Roman Empire. They were ordered to appear in Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on 15 May. Banksy mural: Do people care about trees more after seeing t...

Tropical forest loss in Brazil and Colombia fell dramatically last year but fires and a rise in tree felling elsewhere severely counteracted this progress. In 2023, the tropics lost 3.7 million hectares of primary forest - an area just smaller than Bhutan, or the equivalent of losing 10 football fields per minute. That is around 9 per cent less tropical tree cover lost than in 2022, according to an annual survey by the research organisation the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the University of Maryland. Global tree loss would have been much higher without improvements in Brazil and Colombi...

Washington D.C. is famed for its iconic springtime cherry blossoms. But 100 of them - including the social media phenomenon ‘Stumpy’ - are destined to be chopped down. It's part of a multiyear restoration of their Tidal Basin home, which is being battered by climate change - from rising sea levels to rising temperatures. Crumbling seawall creates flooding risks for cherry trees. Starting in early summer, crews will begin working to replace the crumbling seawall around the Tidal Basin, the area around the Jefferson Memorial with the highest concentration of cherry trees. The work has been long ...

Timber theft, a profitable business, is on the increase in French forests. The gendarmes of Yvelines are tracking down looters, who are responsible for ecological disasters. A forest that existed just a few months ago has been nearly completely eradicated. In Septeuil, located in the Yvelines department, authorities have been probing into the theft of wood for more than a year. The thieves cut the trunks themselves in the surrounding forests. "The type of trees that have been cut down are the beautiful, healthy ones, and what's left are the thin, sickly ones", points out Gabriel Ducrest, comma...

In a world full of division, anger and heartbreak, it’s cathartic to have something uncontroversial that we can all sit back and admire. This majestic tree, with an unusually thick trunk, is located in the heart of the botanical garden of the University of Wroclaw, in the Niemcza region of Poland. It took home 39,158 votes and is the third Polish tree in a row to wi...

A livestock farm in Australia that won plaudits for being carbon neutral is no longer able to offset its emissions. Jigsaw Farms in south-western Victoria was well ahead of the curve at countering the hefty climate impact of cattle farming, boasting its carbon neutral status as early as 2011. But a new report tracking the family farm’s climate impact suggests it tipped into the red in 2017, and has since been emitting more greenhouse gas emissions than it can sequester. Mark Wootton and Eve Kantor’s farm, 250 km west of Melbourne, hosts a fine wool merino operation with around 20,000 ewes and ...
