Researchers at the University of Pisa have discovered a narrative purporting to tell the final hours of Plato, one of Ancient Greece’s greatest philosophers. The narrative was found in a papyrus scroll that had been almost completely destroyed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. In the text, it tells the story of the philosopher, a disciple of Socrates, who died in 348 BC. The Greek philosopher died in bed as he listened to a Thracian slave girl play him the flute, it suggests. A volcano in Iceland that has erupted multiple times since December continued to spew out lava on Tuesday. The crater concerned is located a few kilometres northeast of the town of Grindavik. The active lava flow was confined close to the volcanic cone, officials said, at a safe distance from any infrastructure. Iceland's civil defence has lowered the level of alert for the area from emergency level to danger level. Grindavik, a coastal town of 3,800 people about 50 kilometres southwest of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, was evacuated in November when the Svartsengi volcanic system awakened afte...

Mount Etna in Sicily has been blowing spectacular ‘smoke rings’ into the sky since Wednesday. The volcano, which towers over the historic port city of Catania, is the largest in Europe and one of the most active in the world. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ‘volcanic vortex rings’, a rare phenomenon that is generated by the combination of rapid gas release and the vent shape, spewed out of a new crater that opened on Tuesday on Etna's summit. Boris Behncke, volcanologist at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Catania Boris, explained in a Facebook post th...

Lava from a volcanic eruption in Iceland flowed toward defences around the town of Grindavik on Sunday. So far the fortification has held the molten rock back as the local community was evacuated. Scientists said the eruption appeared to be weakening and would probably peter out within hours. A volcanic system on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the country’s southwest erupted late Saturday for the fourth time in three months, sending orange jets of lava into the night sky. Iceland’s Meteorological Office said the eruption opened a fissure in the earth about 3 kilometres long between the mountains o...

The event is unfolding about 4 kilometres northeast of Grindavik, a coastal town of 3,800 people that was evacuated ahead of a previous eruption on 18 December. The Icelandic Meteorological Office said the lava was flowing westwards and...

Through Artificial Intelligence (AI), a team of researchers have decoded the text of an Ancient Greek scroll burnt in the Pompeii eruptions nearly two millennia ago. In decoding the document, the team have won a contest called the Vesuvius Challenge, named after the volcano that erupted and destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in AD 79. During the cataclysmic eruption, a library of papyrus scrolls was buried. ‘More than just the Trevi Fountain’: Historian to the stars Alexander Mariotti’s guide to RomeArchaeologists discover extraordinary 2000-year-old Roman flatpack bed in central ...
