When it comes to saving energy, a whole new generation of more efficient light bulbs is coming onto the market. With an average lifespan of 50 years, they promise to cut energy bills while reducing carbon emissions.

It is a major player in the sector, Signify, that is behind this innovation, through its Philips Ultra Efficient LED bulb range. These promise to consume 40% less energy compared to standard Philips LED bulbs, for a lifespan estimated at 50 years (based on three hours of use per day), the equivalent of 50,000 hours of light, which is more than three times longer than current LED bulbs.

The range will feature various models, available first in the United States, priced from $10 to $15 depending on their lighting power (from 60 to 100W). These bulbs promise to run on so little that their annual energy cost would barely exceed a dollar. Note that these are not smart bulbs, however, and should not be confused with the Philips Hue range.
