Mother Nature Forces Suspension of Huskers vs. Bluejays

4-4 game will be resumed at a later date with Nebraska threatening in the seventh inning

Lightning forced the suspension of Tuesday night's Nebraska-Creighton baseball game. The contest will be wrapped up at a later date with the score tied 4-4 and Nebraska batting in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and no outs.

After trailing for most of the evening, Nebraska seemed on the cusp of grabbing control of the game in the seventh inning when the weather at Haymarket Park in Lincoln put off NU’s golden opportunity.

Kyle Perry made his first start of the season for the Huskers. The lefthander produced two clean innings working around the Bluejays, who found their way into scoring position. Creighton eventually capitalized in the third on a two-run home run by second baseman Andrew Meggs.

Perry’s day ended after three innings. He allowed two runs, two hits and two walks, and he recorded two strikeouts.

Creighton added to its lead with an RBI double in the fourth inning by right fielder Ben Gbur. The Big Red responded immediately in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run by center fielder Casey Burnham.

Creighton extended its lead to 4-1 in the fifth after a Brice Matthews error and a wild pitch allowed designated hitter Tyler Lozano into scoring position. Lozano was later brought home on a two-out double.

The Huskers finally put some offense together when shortstop Brice Matthews blasted a two-run, 433-foot moonshot that cut the Bluejays' lead to 4-3. The home run was Matthews’s 14th of the season and his third two games.

Nebraska carried the momentum into the next inning, tying the game at four on a single by right fielder Cole Evans that scored third baseman Efry Cervantes.

The Cornhuskers were in a prime position to capture the lead in the bottom of the seventh after loading the bases on a single, a hit by pitch and a walk. After an attempted Creighton pitching change, the game was delayed because of lightning and later suspended. When it resumes has yet to be determined, but Gabe Swansen will be at bat with Max Anderson on third base, Garrett Anglim on second and Charlie Fischer on first with no outs.
