To say the Ford Maverick is a success is an understatement; though it hasn’t been on the market for very long, it already makes up over 3% of the EV market in the US, and its success continues every single day. Orders for the 2023 model year closed just days after opening, and we suspect that’ll be the same for the 2024 model year. Given the success of the hybrid compact truck, we can’t help but wonder when Ford will release a Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) of the truck.
Ford Maverick PHEV: Details
The Ford Maverick Hybrid can drive passengers close to 500 miles on a single tank of gas; that number can be increased by around 30 miles with the help of a PHEV powertrain, or possibly even higher, depending on how the person drives. For people that commute within a 30-mile radius, that’s a perfect setup where fuel will rarely be bought, and should you find yourself short on EV miles, it’s fine as the gas engine is readily available.

According to Heatmap, Ford Spokesman Mike Levine stated that there’s no current need for a PHEV variant of the Maverick. Since the Maverick hybrid makes an EPA-estimated range of 40 mpg in the city and it’s affordable, it’s a bit silly to build a PHEV as that would drive up the cost of the car by a significant margin. In addition, the added weight might not benefit the truck for fuel efficiency. If owners don’t frequently charge the vehicle, they could see an increase in fuel usage over the standard hybrid due to the added weight from the larger batteries.
Based on this information, we can assume there won’t be a PHEV Ford Maverick for the current generation simply because there’s no need for one. The standard hybrid is impressive enough in terms of fuel economy, and so is the gas-only version. Because of this, the only real reason Ford may opt to add a PHEV Maverick to its lineup is due to government mandates which shouldn’t take hold until closer to 2030, which is around the time we can expect the next-generation Ford Maverick to reach the market.
