Baseball: Ohtani goes 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs, Angels lose 3rd straight

Shohei Ohtani went 3-for-5 with two RBIs but the Los Angeles Angels lost their third straight game Tuesday as the Philadelphia Phillies rallied to a 12-7 victory.

Ohtani, whose pitching season ended Wednesday after the two-way star was diagnosed with elbow ligament damage, continued to deliver at the plate as he rose to 94 RBIs for the season, third in the American League and three off leader Kyle Tucker of the Hoston Astros.

Batting second as the designated hitter, Ohtani legged out a single in the third inning on a soft ground ball to pitcher Michael Lorenzen (8-8), whose throwing error to first allowed the Angels to score a run and lead 2-1.

Ohtani had his first RBI in three games in the fifth, lining a single to right off Lorenzen to give his team a 4-2 lead, before a six-run sixth from the Phillies turned things around as Angels starter Tyler Anderson (5-6) was chased.

Ohtani drove in the game's final run in the ninth as he doubled to right-center off Andrew Bellatti at Citizens Bank Park, but the defeat means the chance of the Angels making the postseason playoffs are becoming increasingly slim.

The Angels on Tuesday placed veteran pitchers Lucas Giolito, Matt Moore and Reynaldo Lopez, as well as outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Randal Grichuk on waivers, ESPN reported.
