As MC&T originally reported back in 2019, the Chevrolet Camaro is set to bid us all farewell after the 2024 model year. To be more specific, after December 7th, 2023. This is just before Dodge finishes production of the 2023 Charger and Challenger on December 31st. As a proof point, a photo has been making rounds across the internet that features the the last supercharged LT4 V8 engine for a 2024 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.
A photo of the engine alongside builder Billy Burke and the rest of the GM Performance Build Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky, was published on social media last week, showing off the final power LT4 powerhouse from the factory. It’s a sad moment in history, as it marks the start of the slow death of the legendary V8-engined muscle cars that have created car enthusiasts across the globe.
This beautiful engine produces 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, a plethora of power spinning the rear tires and making beautiful sounds. The LT4 first debuted with the C7 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. It later debuted in the Cadillac CTS-V a year later, albeit making 640 hp, before making its way into the Camaro ZL1 in 2016. The version of the engine applied to the Z06 uses a dry-sump oiling system, while the LT4 engines in the CTS-V and ZL1 feature a more traditional wet-sump design. However, the Cadillac and the Camaro weren’t subject to the much-documented overheating issues that the LT4 was known to have in the Z06. So much so that the aftermarket sought to fix it.
While already formidable, the latest versions of the LT4 is even more powerful. For example, the CT5-V Blackwing makes a whopping 668 horsepower, while the LT4 in the Escalade has 682 ponies thanks to hardware borrowed from the one-and-done LT5 found only on the C7 Corvette ZR1, including its massive supercharger.
In other words, while the Camaro is going back in the garage, the LT4 continues to roar with might in Cadillac’s most exciting products.
