S650 FORD MUSTANG PRODUCTION WILL END IN 2028, PER UAW

Though customers have just been receiving their S650 Ford Mustang, it looks like the date is set for the end of production for the current generation in just four years’ time, which is still far longer than the competition. Thanks to the details disclosed from the new Ford-UAW labor agreement, information has been released to the public regarding plans for vehicles along with their designated assembly plants and the latest points towards the end of production for the S650 Ford Mustang in 2028, meaning after the 2028 model year, the current Ford Mustang will bid us all farewell.

This ties in nicely with previous intel covered by MC&T, which states that the S650 Ford Mustang production would end at the beginning of 2029, paving the way for the 8th generation Mustang to start production that same year, aka the S750 Mustang. Unfortunately, that means we only have four more years until the end of the V8 within the muscle car segment truly comes to pass. But it would have been much sooner if it wasn’t for Ford and its release of the Mustang Mach-E, which saved the day for dedicated muscle car fans across the globe by bringing balance to Ford’s corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) numbers.

As for what will come after the S650 Ford Mustang, that’ll be the S750 Mustang, which is expected to utilize the Ford GE2.2 platform and underpin the second-generation Mach-E and what’s being described as a new Mach-E coupe. That means that we can expect the 8th generation Ford Mustang family to be entirely electric, unless this architecture can support both electric and ICE vehicles, similar to the STLA Large platform that Dodge will utilize for the future Charger and Challenger ICE muscle cars, as well as the electric Charger Daytona making use of the Banshee powertrain.

Considering the lack of public buy-in when it comes to electric vehicles, perhaps technology will have advanced enough in four years that could keep the Coyote V8 howling. Be it e-fuels, hydrogen combustion, or something else.
