10 people displaced by two fires in Jersey City Sunday

Jersey City firefighters put out a fire at 304 Chapel Ave. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024. Three people were displaced.

Jersey City firefighters doused two residential fires Sunday morning, but not before enough damage was done to knock a total of 10 people from their homes, officials said.

Jersey City firefighters responded to 304 Chapel Avenue at approximately 10:30 a.m. and found heavy fire on the second floor of the structure, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire with no injuries to occupants or firefighters, but three people were displaced and assisted by the American Red Cross. The building suffered heavy fire damage on the second floor and roof.

Earlier that morning, seven people, including an infant, were displaced in a fire at a two-family home at 48 Bergen Ave., between Fulton and Woodlawn avenues.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed a working fire in the ceiling of the second floor with extension to the roof area. There were no injuries reported and the displaced residents were assisted by the American Red Cross.
