Human skull found in N.J. forest by hunter, police say

A hunter stumbled upon a human skull in a New Jersey forest late last week, sending investigators to work on identifying the remains.

The skull was found in the Brendan T. Byrne State Forest in Manchester Township on Feb. 23, according to New Jersey State Police. Troopers responded to an area off Route 70 around 7 p.m. after the discovery was made, State Police Detective Jeffrey Lebron said Tuesday.

No other information about the case was available from the agency, Lebron said.

Manchester Township police officials did not immediately return a request by NJ Advance Media for comment.

A cadaver dog was brought where the skull was found on Monday to search for other portions of the person’s body, the Asbury Park Press reported Tuesday, citing an unnamed official.

The woodland has over 38,000 covering the New Jersey Pine Barrens, making it the state’s second-largest forest, according to the New Jersey State Park Service.
