Champions League hopeful wanted Rangers switch; now he could replace £89m World Cup winner

Lewis Ferguson is showing Rangers what they’re missing as his latest goal helps inspire Bologna’s Champions League charge.

The Serie A side came back from a goal down to defeat Atalanta in the Italian top flight over the weekend, with Lewis Ferguson scoring the winner with his sixth goal of the season.

After Ademola Lookman had given the Bergamo club the lead in the first half, Bologna flipped the script in the second half with two goals in four minutes.

Joshua Zirkzee netted a penalty kick equaliser before Lewis Ferguson sent Bologna four points clear in fourth spot, which is a Champions League berth in Italy.

Lewis Ferguson wanted Rangers move

Lewis Ferguson’s latest goal highlights the immense progress the midfielder has made over two seasons at Bologna following a switch from Aberdeen in 2022.

The 24-year-old has emerged as a key player for the Champions League chasing Italians and it’s a source of frustration for Rangers fans.

The son of ex-Rangers midfielder Derek and nephew of Barry, it’s a feeling made worse by the fact his uncle recently claimed that Lewis would’ve “walked” to Ibrox.

“I get asked so much from Rangers fans ‘how did we not sign your nephew’?” Barry Ferguson told GO Radio. “There was no interest, he would’ve walked there. He would’ve walked to Rangers.

“But you look now. He’s went over to Italy, he had a good first season, this season he’s went up a level and now you’re talking £20m and upwards.

“And you know what, he deserves it because he’s went away and he’s worked hard, he’s went into a different environment, away from the family, he’s knuckled down. I think his game’s improved.”

Bologna Champions League chaser tipped for Juventus

The form of Lewis Ferguson at Bologna hasn’t just been grabbing the attention of Ibrox fans or his uncle Barry Ferguson either.

Reports in Italy have suggested that Italian football’s biggest clubs are interested in the midfielder, with Juventus on the hunt to replace Paul Pogba who has been banned for four years due to doping offences.

Speaking about the links, Barry Ferguson sees no reason why nephew Lewis can’t go on and replace the £89m World Cup winner in Turin.

“I’m not surprised at all (he’s been spoken about in Italy),” said Ferguson. “He’s having a brilliant season and obviously you seen the big news about Pogba, banned for four years.

“That obviously opens a space in the midfield and why would you not go and try sign him? He’s a goalscoring midfielder, a good athlete, let’s hope it happens.”

Lewis Ferguson has made 61 appearances for Bologna, scoring 13 goals in Italy and even captaining the club since making a £1.7m switch from Aberdeen.
