Sheffield Wednesday teen now tops Championship table for one incredible stat after Plymouth win

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper James Beadle has become a leading shot-stopper in the Championship after the win vs Plymouth Argyle.

Sheffield Wednesday earned a fourth-straight win after a 1-0 win vs Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday night.

The Owls are now on 38 points; level with Stoke City, Huddersfield Town, Millwall, and QPR, with just six points separating Danny Rohl‘s side with Watford in 12th.

It’s been an incredible turnaround for Sheffield Wednesday.

It came after a January transfer window which at first had mixed reviews. But since, the emergences of Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda have proved that it was a fruitful window for the Owls.

And the emergence of James Beadle has been a pleasure to watch as well.

James Beadle showing his class with Sheffield Wednesday

The 19-year-old joined on loan from Brighton in January after spending time on loan with Oxford United before hand.

Ahead of his arrival, his ability to play out from the back was hailed, and was arguably the reason why Rohl brought him in.

But Beadle has also shown great shot-stopping ability of late; he’s become a really assuring goalkeeper, coming out and claiming crosses and corners and pulling off some huge saves to help Sheffield Wednesday during this upturn in form.

He’s now kept back-to-back clean sheets for the Owls, with four clean sheets in his last six outings.

In nine Championship appearances for Wednesday, Beadle has kept five clean sheets (Cameron Dawson kept four during the first half of the season and Devis Vasquez kept one).

Five clean sheets in nine leave’s Beadle with a clean sheet percentage of 55.6%, which is the highest of any goalkeeper in the Championship (who’s played more than one game in the league this season).

One for the future

Brighton certainly have a top goalkeeper on their hands in Beadle.

At just 19 years old, he’s made the step up from the League One to the Championship, and in a very difficult situation at Hillsborough, has shown great maturity.

Again, not only is his ability to play out from the back a real USP for Beadle, but he’s shown that he can the basics of goalkeeping very well too.

His overall game certainly makes him ideal for the Premier League and after his impressive Sheffield Wednesday stint, he may well be playing in the top flight a lot sooner than anticipated.

Right now though his focus will be on matters in S6.

Sheffield Wednesday are still in the bottom three with 12 games to go, and with tough fixtures against Leeds United and Ipswich Town coming up, the gap to safety could quickly reopen.

Kick off vs Leeds United is at 8pm on Friday.
