'Did not contribute enough': Leeds loanee blasted by local media, earns 4/10 after playing in new role

Plymouth Argyle suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night as Ian Poveda got the better of both Adam Forshaw and Darko Gyabi – and local media have criticised the latter player.

Poveda actually had a goal disallowed and was praised by the Sheffield Star in the battle between the two Leeds loanees. Poveda of course, is expected to leave Leeds permanently at the end of the season.

Gyabi, meanwhile, remains under contract at Leeds until the summer of 2026 – and will return to Elland Road at the end of the season. However, his long-term future at Leeds remains in doubt right now.

Since joining Plymouth on loan in January, he has started every Championship game he has been able to play – the other, being Leeds on February 17. But on Tuesday night, he was given a new position to play.

Naturally, a no.6 or a no.8 in central midfield, the England U20 star was used in the left-sided no.10 position – with Plymouth playing a 3-4-2-1, two 10’s behind striker Ryan Hardie. But it did not go to plan.

Leeds man Darko Gyabi criticised after Plymouth lose on Tuesday

Plymouth are looking for a successor to Finn Azaz after he moved to Middlesbrough in January, having starred for Argyle during the first half of the season. But Gyabi failed to have any kind of an impact.

Poveda’s Wednesday won 1-0, and Gyabi was hooked on 70 minutes. Plymouth Live handed the £5m Leeds man a rating of 4/10, saying he “did not contribute enough” during the clash on Tuesday night.

“One tame shot easily saved and did not contribute enough in an attacking sense from the left number 10 role, which has proved to be a difficult position to fill since Finn Azaz left at the start of January.”
